The family (2 adults + 7 year old boy + twin 3 year old girls) were planning to go away during the October half term but have no idea where to go!
We like active holidays, outdoor activities, the beach, walking, cycling, swimming, fun fairs, science museums, cooking, farmers markets, ...
Budget is not unlimited but isn't that limited for the right place
Suggestions?

We rented a house in the Cotswolds last October half term (in Chipping Camden).
Had a day at Warwick Castle (which was doing Halloween stuff), day at Batsford Arboretum (which was great as all the Autumn colours), day at Cotswold Farm Park, day at Cotswold Wildlife Park and day in Bourton on the Water, which has various things to do in the village.
Needs some dry weather for those, but they were all good, with 4 adults and a 6 and 3 year old.0 -
Center Parcs always seems a popular choice for school holidays with lots to do for all ages.
Personally, we normally book a holiday cottage in Cornwall/Devon/Dorset. For this Oct half term we have rented a wooden lodge on a little campsite in Newquay as there is an unlimited amount of things to do that suit all ages.0 -
We went on the harry potter steam train from fort william then over the sea to Skye and it got a big thumbs up from all of our family. We had a lovely family room in each hotel and the first hotel had a fantastic kids menu for their dinner.
We went with seescotlanddifferently.com but I think it's something you could do quite easily yourself too.0 -
Center Parcs would fit the bill
or Bluestone in South Wales http://www.bluestonewales.com/ lots to see and do in the area ,castles, walks, cycle paths, beaches etc
A fab pool onsite, and Folly Farm nearby which can be paid with Tesco deals

There are some pretty lovely places in Cornwall but that can be expensive.
You could try going across to Wales as well. I'm afraid I can't remember the name, but you can rent teepees (some quite nice ones) is Wales and they offer a whole experience for families. I would just search teepees, Wales to try and find the places that provide it.0 -
Where do you want to go in general
I know of a Welsh holiday home still available for October half term sleeps 6 for about £330 per week in Gwynedd:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -

I like the idea of the Cotswolds and apparently my wife knows someone with a cottage there!
I've never thought of Newquay what is there to do down there for the kids apart from the beach?
BlueStone looks nice and worth further investigation
We had already thought of Center Parcs but never gone as it always looks a bit over priced to me.
We've been to Skye and it's a long way from London in October.
Lots of help so thanks to everyone.

center parcs is pricey in shool hols
and I wont pay those stupid prices
always worth checking the dates though,as this year eg we ( in Wales) broke up a week earlier for Easter than the rest of UK and so were able to take advantage of a cheaper holiday!0
