No payment from Scottish Widows Demutualisation

I was made aware that I was due compensation from the Scottish Widows demutualisation, they say that payment was made to me on 21/08/2000 I know I did not recieve this payment, obiously 10 years is a long time and my bank details are no longer available, contacted the financial ombudsman and was informed that Scottish Widows had insisted to them that they were not enpowered to act, so ombudsman has dropped my case.
Iwould be very pleased to hear if anybody else has been in this situation with Scottish Widows and the outcome.

  • I have also been told that a cheque was sent to me by post on 21st August 2000 - I received no such payment. Scottish Widows say "their records" confirm all sorts of things - however they can't produce these records. My next step was to approach the financial ombudsman, however, in view of what you have said, it sounds as if that will be a waste of time. Lets face it, we are making our claims for compensation, because we know we haven't had a payment - it's easy for Scottish Widows to simply say "we sent you a cheque, you have cashed it", but not be able to prove it. Has anyone made a successful claim ? If they have, please let us know. Thank you.

Ask your bank for a copy of your statement covering a period after 21/08/2000

  • Hi dunstonh

Have done that - and they also say that their records don't go back that far - they suggested that I ask Scottish Widows to show me their records - and guess what - they don't have any either - but say "they know the cheque they supposedly sent to me was cashed" - I asked into which account, and again they can't tell me. It's like "Catch 22".

What bank is that? I'm with Lloyds and they can go back to the 50s. Although going back beyond the 80s is quite hard work.

  • Its the RBS - I was directed to my local branch - and they said they didn't have records going back that far.
I did ask Scottish Widows to tell me into which account the "cheque" was cashed to - as they claim it was actually cashed, and of course they can't tell me.

Mine was a success story, as explained in my earlier posting. So why did others not get their money? I note that all those who are still waiting were told that the "payment" was sent to them on 21 August 2000. Should we think that Scottish Widows are capable of dispatching thousands of cheques in one day? Probably not. My cheque, according to a letter from SW, had been dispatched on September 15 2000. Perhaps others were sent their money successfully on other dates and are therefore not posting messages here? (The fact that the money took about 10 years to reach me is explained in my earlier posting).
