Salad Leaves

I live in an upstairs flat with no garden, just a nice big bright window in the kitchen, I'm thinking of growing some salad leaves if possible?

It would have to be in pots, smallish pots lol.

Is this possible? Obviously I could make cress, but wanted something a bit more substantial and moneysaving on the lettuce I buy.

I don't like rocket :( sorry.!

The Greenfingered board is probably a better place to ask, but yes, you can easily grow lettuce in small pots, even in seed trays, on a windowsill. You can choose from loads of mixed leaves, and these are 'cut and come again', so a bit like cress, you just give them a bit of a haircut from time to time (but you let its hair grow longer lol). You can also grow spring onions in even the smallest, shallowest pot, and even chillies or tomatoes in average sized ones, though it's a bit late for those last two this year.

You can buy packets of salad seeds, sprinkle in a pot, cover and water, I think on a sunny window sill about 10 days or so they should start to grow, keep watered, and in a few weeks you will be able to pick what you need for each meal.

GeeGee8 I'm a regular grower of salad leaves on my kitchen windows. I also use to grow herbs on it when I didn't have a garden.

we grow salad leaves all year round on the window cill with these DIY self watering planters.
Make your own from a 4 litre milk carton, cut in half, make a hole in the top and poke through some cloth to act as as a wick. fill with compost , put seed on top. Insert into bottom half and pour water into bottom. Job done. Here's one i made earlier :)

That's great to know :) I never thought of it until now, but the salad I buy is quite expensive and it either goes off quick, accidently freezes in the fridge, or I run out! lol :p

I tend to use summer fruit punnets i.e. the ones that peaches, plums come in to grow mine in as they are square and quite shallow.

You can get ones with holes in that can fit with the ones without holes.
