I can understand that if I were involved in the accident, but it was clearly the 3rd party's fault entirely as I wasn't anywhere near the car.

You are involved. it was your property damaged (and more importantly) it's your money that will be lost unless you are able to reclaim it from the third party!

    And what about this:
Hmm - this is odd, as I had a previous incident a couple of years ago with my previous insurance company (Aviva) who didn't make me pay the excess (again it was a "hit and run" accident) and got the repairs carried out BEFORE even the admission of liability as the incident was plainly not my fault (the other car had shunted into me).

So, I have no experience of having to chase the 3rd party myself - how do I go about this?

Sorry - I was referring to the first part of the quote :)

OK, aviva operated differently and didn't need you to pay your excess.

The situation you are in now is different. Your insurer correctly made you pay your excess over six months ago. You asked here what to do as you haven't had it back yet, and have been given a suggestion. Normally it's up to the policyholder to reclaim their uninsured losses from the third party.

Thanks for explaining that. No need to be quite so abrupt though.
