without sounding sensible you could always wrap a new york guide book up for her bithday and put the tickets inside and book for the following week. that way she will have time to prepare and get the things us lady's like to take with us and you will probably get a better deal on the cost as it will not be in peak time. she will b more relaxed as she will have time to sort the children out and will also get time to spend christmas with everyone.
As a woman I would prefer to do it after then that way it feels like a 2nd birthday but also you havent excluded the kids on the day of her actual birthday aswell.
I had actually thought of that mamabear but was worried that if we go after xmas / new year say in early January then won't the atmosphere have died a bit, I liked the idea of being able to say "xmas time in New York is great"0 -
I can't speak for your wife, but Christmas and new year is always hectic with friends and family and having a birthday in between that kind of gets lost.I would personally love to go away after that. All the friends and family stuff is dun and it will be your special time together. New York is such an amazing place to go to and of the four times I have been the trip I loved the most was the one for my 40th. Not for the presents but just because we had such good memories. The weather was kind and the sales were on which also brings me to another point.
Surely going after Christmas and New Year there will be far more bargains to be had and every woman loves a bargain! What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger.0 -

Good point, I suppose I can see what the trip would cost if we went in January. If it's cheaper she gets more spends.0 -
Sounds excellent have a great time. i was considering doing it for my hubbys 40th in Dec however I would have to take the three kids 18,16 and 11 ended up way too expensive. I found some good deals on expedia however the choice of hotels was getting slimmer each time I looked but I did want to go for new year.
Have a great time!0 -
We stayed in NY from 27 December until 9 January. It was very cold as others have noted but that does not matter too much the main issue with the winter is that they days are short.
We were ther for New year and had some crazy idea of going to Times Square It was closed as it was full from 5.00pm We got about 20 blocks away and all the restaurants were closed except those that had pre booked events. We stood in a crush of people for 3 hours walked miles and ate a take away. It was the driest New year ever not even a glass of wine.
The moral of this story is if you are visiting over a holiday you need to pre book any entertainment and don't expect to turn up at restaurants over the holiday period.
We still had a great time and stayed at the Millenium close to the UN building. There is a swimming pool on the 27th floor and what a fab experinece swimming in mid air over looking the Empire State Building
We will defiantely go back but in the summer next time and be a bit more organised0
