am looking to trade in our old car, and put £10k with it to get a new car, I'll either be using cash to barter a good price, or putting in on a 0% purchase credit card

What sort of deal will i get if i turn up with cash instead of a credit card? do dealers still offer a better price?

    Hi BB.
In my limited experience with dealers they will usually not accept a credit card for such a large sum because they will have to pay the CC company a fee of whatever percent. If they do accept the CC then any fee limits thier ability to give you a decent discount. Don't forget section 75CCA so try and pay at least £100 with a CC for greater protection.

Like wise with cash they will lose the commision they get on selling you finance so dealers don't regard "discount for cash" as a good thing.

Private sellers are more likely to be influenced by immediate cash. Stick a wad of say £9,000 under a nose and threaten to walk away usually works wonders.

That is not to say don't use cash they will always be some room to negotiate a better deal. Can you withdraw cash on the CC and still qualify for 0%.

Lastly I have bought my last few cars at auction and I don't mean the back street/small time operation. BCA for example have a very good website and to avoid the risk of comebacks they are scrupulous in how they describe the cars. I admit that once bought you are more on your own than with some dealers but a lot of dealers, as per my last car purchase, are not worth much anyway. Main dealers are better but you pay a lot more.

Try other auction sites as well but the one I look at gives guaranteed mileage on most cars and there are a lots of low mileage motability cars.

When I recently bought a car I took my secret weapon with me. My mum.

We had two cars to look at in garages about 5 miles apart. We saw the first car. It was up for £8995. I liked it and asked what his best price for cash was and he said £8450. I ummed and aahed a bit and then he said "Buy it today and I'll do it for £8250".

I said I just wanted to go and have a look at the other one and took his card.

We drove to see the other one which I didn't like so much. So we called the first garage and my mum said "She really likes your car but the other one is also nice. How about we give you £8000 and come right now and give you a deposit?"

    "OK" he said.

I was pleased with that because I would never have thought to call hime back and ask for another discount. Good old mum.

I am off out to potentially buy a car today, so will use your mum's technique, pimento! I am rubbish at haggling, probably cos I don't do it enough, but I am limiting myself to downsizing my car and don't want to spend more than trade-in + £1k, which will probably allow me up to £6.

Can I expect to see a £7k car and get it for £6k?? I will certainly try! Was told that it's best to go in the last week of the month as the salespeople are looking to boost sales for the month, is that an old fish wifes tale?

If someone turns up to buy a car and pay a large amount in cash, then we will charge them a small % as our bank charges us for cash. Pay on debit card and its free. Credit cards attract about 2.5% fee.

Alos, I think the most you can pay in cash in £9000 before you have to be investigated for money laundering.

Do your homework first and see if the car is keenly priced or not. The number of people we see who ask for money off juct "because no one pays the screen price" is unreal...!

If you don't get the deal you want, walk away, car dealers are two a penny, try another one.

Cash buyers are not welcomed in dealers nowadays because they can't sell mouth watering finance option then :D
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

With my new car they were happy to accept the deposit (£500) on credit card but the balance had to be paid with a debit card or the 2.5% charge would be added to the cost of the car. They were quite up front about this so no problem at all. It was also the first time I have not had a garage pushing finance at me.
I'm not sure you will get a great deal off nowadays as cars do seem to be priced more realistically to start with. I was looking at 3 cars at 3 different dealers and all 3 gave a trade in within £75 of each other. I was happy with the "to change" price so bought the car.

cheers people, so if i turn up with our car (already agreed trade in value of it), and my credit card for the other £10k, is he likely to budge much? or could i barter for something for free, like warranty etc?

sorry for the silly questions just never bought from a dealer before
