They once expressed a cheque for me, many years ago, but I think I was a little surprised at the charge they made. Can't remember what it was but, as I needed the money quickly, I had to agree.

They may have a list of charges on their website - if not, ask first!

    Oh my.

And if someone steals that cheque, or if it gets binned or destroyed somehow rather than put on the system what will you do?

I suppose you could claim against the receipt that the cashier gave you when you went into the... wait, that's right - you have NO PROOF that the cheque ever went to the bank!

I suppose that you could have used one of the bank machines that accepts payments in - I think they give you a receipt after you've put the payment through the slot.

I must say, I've often put cheques through the door of the bank and never had a problem.

I'm sure that they work in the same way that correspondence is handled where my wife works (which involves payments-in, sometimes coming in as cash in an envelope). Here they have two people opening the post, together with a supervisor who watches but handles none of it. Banks probably work the same type of system.

There's no such thing (outside of 'cheque clearers' who will charge you 20% for the privilege)

If you're thinking of 'special clearance' .... all that does is validate whether there will be funds to meet the cheque when cleared. It doesn't clear the cheque any faster :-
