actual readings wrong???

hi, i was just wondering if anyone has any help for me about my gas bill!
for the march to may quarter, i had actual readings done and the bill states i used 821 units in the space of 3 months which gave me a bill with edf energy for £388! thing is, iv lived in this hse over a yr and the most i have ever spent on the gas is £120 on the winter period. it seemed pretty steep seeing as i havent realli got gas appliances, everythings electric!
anyway, after phoning them up to see if it was correct, one man told me to do meter readings for 7 days then when i rang with the readings, a different man told me that was a waste of time! urgh!
and to top it off, iv worked out that since the reading for that bill in may, iv used only 16 units of gas in 6 weeks - theyre sayin that my usage during march - may was 68 units a week!

has anyone got any help? please!

£120 seems very steep if you do not have any gas appliances. But £120 two years ago compared to £388 this year seems perfectly reasonable - I certainly used a lot more than three times as much this winter.

When you say units do you mean meter units or kWhs? Eg, 16 imperial meter units over six weeks is more than 68 kWhs per week (about 83 kWhs) as would be expected. Do you have an imperial gas meter? One imperial meter unit is about 32 kWhs whereas one metric meter unit is about 11.2 kWhs. There does seem that there is a confusion with metric and imperial meters - 821 units could only cost £388 if you have a metric meter but your subsequent six week sample suggests an imperial meter. To correspond with your bill you would only be using 30 kWhs per week.

Are all your bills actual (at start and end readings) or are you confusing catch-up bills with estimated bills (what initial letter is written after the meter readings? Actual, Customer read or Estimate)

I agree with KimYeovil, check you previous bills or if you dont have those just the start read on your current bill. If the start read has E'stimate' against it then you are probably paying catch up.

The golden rule is that every time you get a gas or elec bill you check if the end reading is an A'ctual', if it is not you read your meter and check the readings are about the same (reading should be slightly higher than bill). If the reading on the meter is way off (higher or lower) compared to the bill phone your supplier with the reading and get them to rebill you.

  • yea both the reading at the start and end of the bill are actual.

im not sure tho about metric or imperial meters, all im goin on is the number which was on the bill on 23rd of may, which was 5002 units, and checked my meter again this morning and its only on 5018!!!!!

i just dont see how edf think my gas usage could go from 4181 units on 5th of march to 5002 on 23rd may! does anyone kno of a complaints procedure or appeal or wateva that i could do? cant really afford £388 on gas that im positive i havent used!!!

You meter should have something like m3 (cubic metre) on it and this should match the bill. If the 2 are not aligned (1 metric, 1 imperial) I think this puts your bill out by a factor of 3. Given that they are both actual readings, you have used the gas its just a case of if it has been billed correctly.

Hi ccbesant - The numbers you gave of using 821 units Mar to May, resulting in a £388 bill show that you are being charged for a Metric Meter - If was an Imperial meter the bill would have been over £800 - but it does seem that at a cost of appx. 4p a unit that you are not on a good tariff, so add your annual Kwh consumptions for Gas & Elec and visit a few Switch Sites

The figure you gave of a £120 bill for the previous Winter period, is too broad to be of help - Was this the entire winter or just one Qtr?, and what were the meter readings or Kwh charged ?
