I got a quote of just under £24,000.00 for a Conservatory 4m x 3.5m. This included just about everything (walls, floors, electric) and a Vertex style roof.

    £24000 :rotfl:

i hope you did not accept that
  • I did actually. It was in what I budgeted for. Your price of £4,000.00 just seems way too low to me. It must be a real cheap job.

Estimate at least £1000 per square metre. Ours is 5m x 5m at about £26k last year, this included the reinforced concrete raft and edge beam - due to soft ground. Brick dwarf wall, 7 courses high inside to window sill (timber not plastic because of the heat), drainage to new soakaways, plastering, double glazed, double doors to rear, double doors to dining room, single door to front, heat reflecting glass to Edwardian roof, electric circuit - including outside power socket, lightling circuit, painting.

Then add £1000-1400 (based on the size you want) for Inverter Air Source Heat Pump, £1000 or so for Karndean wood-effect floor (lovely), £1000-1500 for cane furniture (Desser at Wyevale Garden centres, including cushions), breakfast table and chairs, then standing lights/lamps. Be aware that prices for blinds are exhorbitent - a con really. Find a local fitter rather than the nationals - you will get lots of brochures through when you put your planning application in...

Check the ground you will be basing the walls/floor on - as the rule of thumb - 1metre below ground - may not be enough, as you do not want large cracks forming as it settles relative to the house. Flexible joints should be used to the inside as well as the outside to take out the small inevitable settlement.

Then enjoy. We had Christmas day with family - 12-14 adults confortably. Heat pump on for 10minutes to heat up and then trickle all day - nice...

    Good luck,
    John

Could you provide some more information about your Air Source Heat Pump. Never thought of one of those, but sounds like an interesting idea, especially one which does cooling as well as heating. Have had a quick google and found one that would do both for about £533.00 (plus fitting kit and installation) here

    Thanks.

    Julian,

All ASHP do both heating and cooling. All they run is a pump for the coollant. There is lots of information on ASHP in this forum:

Depending on the volume of the conservatory and its aspect you may need more than the 2.6kW shown on your link. Our 5x5 conservatory has a volume of about 65m^3 and a 5.3kW unit would have sufficed - however, I do not like having units that would just about cope so we went for the next size up at 6.1kW - which was only about £100 more.

We have had the unit working over the winter and especially cooling now with this heat, it is a godsend. The internal unit is mounted high above the doorway to the dining room and as we are a bungalow the pipework to the outside unit is plumbed through the loft space. A friend has the internal unit low on the dwarf wall and the outside unit higher up on the house wall - due to a narrow pathway. You need to consider the locations of the units and the pipe runs.

Some people complain they make lots of noice. At the moment the internal unit is running on high fan level and is noticeable - but turn it to low or ultra-low and you can hardly here it. The outside unit is very quite and if you were sitting outside chatting you would not notice it.

Do go for the better known brands - fujitsu, mitsubushi (ours), Dalkin also. Look at a website: OrionAirSales for lots of different makes and types.

    Regards,
    John
