This site kept the roof over my head:)

I have been through it all just about! Since becoming a single mum in Dec 2002, I struggled with incapacity benefit and no benefit, CSA trouble, tax credit problems and so on. I was on a very tight budget already then I was left short by £50 a week due to non receipt of child maintenance. If it hadn't been for this site I would not have been able to make all the savings I had to enable me and my 3 children to stay in the house, with a £450 pcm mortgage, plus the £144 endowment policy
I still have debts I am paying off, incurred due to having to use credit cards for essential repairs in the house, but I now am systematically tackling them, again thanks to this site
I have changed my utility supplier (second time due soon...) moved credit cards for the 0% offers, shopped around for phone deals, and saved loads by making the most of my old style cooking and household budgeting skills.
Thanks Martin for creating an online community where the spend spend spend mentality is not seen as the norm, and saving money, paying off debts can be enjoyable and an achievement rather than a chore.

Now I am happily not single and engaged to be married near the end of the month. I feel like I have climbed a mountain, but the rewards are immense.

  • You've learnt a lot about managing finance and have good reason to be proud of your achievement. Good luck.

  • Hi, congrats on your fab story. I too found myself a single mum back in 1996 and too struggled with benefits for a few years. I am now a firefighter with my own house, my son is 10 and gorgeous and we're doing just fine. One question though, where did you find the decent man?

  • I became a single mum of two at the age of 42. I had the same as Sarah, mortgage, bills, debts from other half.... Did all the things that people suggested, claimed everything, and now have paid off my mortgage, and will be debt free in Jan 2007! I also have a new man (also found through the internet!)
Congratulations Sarah, it can be done!
