    Comparisons (for BT Together customers) between BT and 18185 for 0870 & 0845 calling.

    As will be seen below, using the 18185 prefix from a BT landline now only results in a saving on the 'per minute' cost of evening 0845 calls (of ½p/minute) and, taking into account 18185's 5p 'startup fee' as opposed to BT's 3p 'call set-up fee', you may consider it's just not worth the hassle and use BT for all such calls (dial a 1280 prefix if you use a CPS provider).

    However, 18185's cable users' freephone 0808 1 703 703 gateway number (which can also be dialled from a BT landline) is, at times, now the cheapest way to call 0870 numbers:

    0870 - excluding 0870 09, 0870 185, 0870 187 and 0870 188 numbers for which BT charges 4.95p/minute Weekdays, 2.49p/minute Evenings and 2p/minute Weekends.

    Weekdays

    BT
    -----------3p 'set-up fee'-++ 7p/min
    18185--------5p 'startup fee'-+ 6p/min
    08081703703--4p connection----+ 5p/minute (but website, wrongly, states 3p/minute)

    Evenings
    BT
    -----------3p 'set-up fee' ++ 3½p/min
    18185--------5p 'startup fee' + 4p/min
    08081703703--4p connection____+ 5p/minute (but website, wrongly, states 3p/minute)

    Weekends

    BT
    -----------3p 'set-up fee' ++ 1½p/min
    18185--------5p 'startup fee' + 2p/min
    08081703703--4p connection----+ 1p/minute

    0845

    Weekdays
    BT
    ------3p 'set-up fee' ++ 3p/min
    18185---5p 'startup fee'-+ 3p//min

    Evenings
    BT
    ------3p 'set-up fee' ++ 1p/min
    18185---5p 'startup fee'-+ ½p/min

    Weekends
    BT
    ---_--3p 'set-up fee' ++ ½p/min
    18185---5p 'startup fee' + ½p/min

    Remember though that, although BT prices rarely change, 18185's can (and do) change more frequently - so always check the the MSE UK Callchecker.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    If you use a lot of 0870 it might be work looking at o2 contracts ... a standalone new contract might not stack up as worthwhile just for this, but if you get better deal ( retention) or use as part of your normal mobile ( assuming all calls within allowance) , it works out well... I never call 0870 from a landline always from a o2 mobile

    But O2 have just started charging people with payg inclusive minutes to call 0844/0845/0870 numbers,and increased the rates. So their is a good chance contracts will follow in due course.:eek:

    The 0870 numbers you refer to with lower rates eg 0870 09 are internet access numbers,not day to day 0870 numbers.

  • Not a lot of good if its not listed,as 1000s of them are not, as they grow quicker then bineweed.
  • 0870 really winds me up, I want to deal with the company or have to choise yet I have pay over the odds to calls them.....GRRR
