next doors building works

Just need some advice really, next door is doing up their house which is fair enough, they just bought it and it's a bit of a toilet. The point is the fence between us has been taken out and in the mean time he is having some work done on an out building by some builders. The thing is yesterday they were on ladders in my garden and today I just noticed they are in my garden again with some gear on my grass. They have never asked to come in to my garden which I find sort of annoying, should I say anything or am I just B!tching?
Nothing to see here, move along.

As long as they aren't doing any serious damage, I'd be happy that the work they are doing next door improves the appearence of the area and deals with the (sounds like an) eyesore adjacent to my house.

I disagree. Works on no works, the least they could do is check it's ok to encrouch on your land. Personally I'd be a bit p*ssed off about it. Next they'll be sitting in your garden eating their lunch!
  • I would speak to your neighbours about it, it could be that they are not aware that the builders are ultimately trespassing (even by leaving things on your land it comes under that!). Also check that whatever they are doing is not undermining your foundations, if they are building next to a boundary then they are in effect meant to comply with the Party Wall Etc Act (I can send you a link to that if you require more information).

A polite chat with them about what they are planning to do, and then mention the builders behavour and see what they say. I guess what you don't want to do is get off on a wrong footing, but then again if they are intentionally not respecting you as a neighbour then there is no point fielding the problem.

I agree with lush, try and stay calm and be polite as possible with neighbours.

I must admit I had a problem when I had some workmen in many years ago, they went into next doors yard and used there tap outside to mix sand/cement. I wasnt aware that they were doing this but by the time I knew it was too late they had gone. If it was me I wouldnt be happy either, but I guess some of them get carried away and want the job done quickly.

the best thing would have been was to ask not just use your garden that would have got my back up straight away its just common decency.
Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)
  • I had a chat and the builder thought that it had been sorted out, I said it hadn't and he apologized. I can't wait for the new fence to go up so I can have some privacy back.

Doesn't say much for your new neighbours.

Ah, reminds me of last Xmas.
We'd hired a large 8 cu. yard skip over the hols, with aims of topping the conifers and clearing 'rubbish' from the shed, you get the idea...
It was parked on our front garden. No problem...
Yeah, that was until I returned from shopping one morning to find the planks of wood my husband used as run-ups into the skip all set up, blocking our drive way, so I couldn't get my car off the road.
I seriously don't know who was more shocked. Me, at finding the next-door neighbours gardener wheelbarrowing the neighbours rubbish up into our skip, or him at realising he had been caught in the act.
I wasn't happy. He'd clearly deliberately waited until I'd driven out earlier before he set up the planks etc., and hadn't expected to see me arrive back so soon...
The gardener sheepishly put our planks of wood back where he'd taken them from, I backed my car onto the drive and went round to the neighbour.
She claimed she hadn't even noticed we'd got a skip on our front garden! It'd been there a week by this time, and when I asked where did she think her gardener was wheelbarrowing all her rubbish to, she claimed she had no idea.
She soon got the message that we hadn't paid £130 out for a skip hire to accomodate everyone else's !!!!!! being put into it.
I didn't go as far as to tell her or her gardener to take their stuff out of the skip, but they got the message not to put anything else in it.
Not very neighbourly of me, I know, but all I could think was "Bloody cheek, bloody cheek!"
