Cat peeing inside house

We've had a problem with one of our cats for a while now - he seems to occasionally pee inside the house but there's no rhyme or reason to it. He doesn't seem stressed - he's eating okay - everything else appears normal but it doesn't matter what product I use to clean it or (supposedly) repel, nothing works.

Favourite places are:

living room rug
coir mats at front and back door (we've tried various different kinds of mat and renew them constantly)
bedroom carpet
wooden floor
the bath!!

At least when it's the bath it's easily cleaned and washed away!

He's going outside as well and I happened to see him doing the toilet yesterday - nothing seemed amiss and the vet has ruled out an infection.

Any advice gratefully welcomed .......
Marg :)

What are you using to clean up?
The best thing to do is to use a solution of biological washing powder, leave it to work for a few minutes and then rinse. The enzymes in it will break down the wee and the smell will go and kitty will be less likely to go there again. Dont use bleach if thats what you've been using as it smells like wee to a kitty.

    Is he neutered?

I'm having the same problem with my cat, he uses the back door mat and the front door mat. Theye are washable so I am able to put them in the washing machine with bio powder but it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference, he goes back to the daily.
I have sprayed them with vinegar, sprinkled mustard and pepper on them, used tee tree oil and cytronella oil, rubbed orange and lemon skins into them and nothing works.
I have even taken them up in the summer in hope he will forget about it, but that doesn't work either.
Anyone knowing something we don't please do tell!
He was neutered at five months old and he was two in February.

Yes he is neutered. To be honest I can't remember the stuff we've used previously but they've all been pet products specially for this problem - none have worked though. We're just using Zapit emergency clean up powder at the moment for the stains on the mats as that seems to be good for getting them out. I'll try the bio washing powder solution though and see what happens.

we had a similar prob with one of our cats. the vet suggested getting a plug in call feliway ( i think) as cats are naturally very clean animals so there has to be a reason why they are wetting inside. stress, infection , being bullied by another cat and scared to go out etc. The feliway helps to relax and cat. unfortunalty it didn't work for our cat. we tried all sorts.
she then started poo'ing indoors and was licking herself so she was becoming bald. took her to vets and he said she was stressed and the reason for poo'ing and wee'ing indoors was her way of saying please love me . she was a tortie and very nervous. we had two young children under 4 and torties aparently can't cope with too much noise. so when we found out baby 3 was on way we knew we had to consider rehoming. spoke to vet and he said this was the best option for her. doesn't mean i didn't cry my eyes out for a whole day when took her to cats protection. and i phoned up every day till she had a new home, took 3 weeks. as i wanted her to be loved.
i'm sure this isn't the same with your cat, but just bear it in mind. maybe phone ur vet and ask for advice.

Aw what a shame but you did the right thing. Funnily enough that's exactly how we got the cat in question - Bailey - his owner was having her first baby and didn't think he would cope which I found quite strange - think I would have hung on to see first before rehoming but maybe she didn't want to chance stressing him out too much.

We had seen saw the advert for Bailey and Willow (brothers) in the vets in January but I wasn't sure I wanted 2 cats at that point and I had phoned the Cats Protection League previously to put my name down for a cat after ours had died. In March they phoned me and we went to have a look and picked out 2 cats - long story but their owner ended up coming back for them as we were there so we had to switch - the lady said 2 cats had just come in half an hour ago and here were Bailey and Willow!

I had the owner's details on the documents I was given so wrote her a letter to say she was welcome to come and see them any time - she popped round with the baby once and that's when she told us why she had put them up to be rehomed.

I actually assumed it was stress as soon as he started doing it but there doesn't seem to be any cause that we can think of. He's not showing any other signs of stress that we can see. We did add a dog to the family last year but he was peeing inside long before that and it didn't get worse or anything at the time or afterwards. He also seemed to adapt really well to the whole situation (the dog had been used to living with 4 cats so knew how to behave around them) and Bailey appears to be quite relaxed around the dog. He gets just as much attention as he did before so I can't think what it's all about.

He also 'asks' to get out the front door when we're in the house and sometimes he goes out the cat flap so I don't think it's laziness or being scared to go out or anything. I mean sometimes if it's windy or bucketing rain he'll come right back in again but then so would I!

Do you have littertrays in the house?

No we started off with trays after we moved (2 years ago) but both cats soon graduated to going outside. Bailey took longer than Willow - he's more of an inside cat in general. I'd really rather not go back to having a tray if I can avoid it!

Oh well, if it was a toss up between having to clean up smelly wee on my carpets or clean out a litter tray once a day or every other day if he also goes outside, i know which one id rather!
