forward facing speed camera

when the "normal" gatso box is turned around on its pole so it faces forward rather than backwards is the camera actually fitted, or does it actually work,

for example i know of 2 places where the box was set up with the camera taking the picture after you passed and the road still has the markings showing distances travelled but these 2 boxes now face forwards and so markings are now irrelevant.

I have never seen a flash from this box, but is there a new type of camera which does not need the flash and does not need the road markings or have they just done this to intimidate people to slow down before the camera ?

If there are no markings, they can't prove what speed you were doing.

    AFAIK

I've seen rotatable speed cameras but they point at whichever side of the road which leads away from the camera (i.e monitoring cars going East-West, then the camera is turned to monitor West-East direction)

Of course there are forward facing cameras around but they don't flash.

Derby ring road, There is at least one camera that can be turned to catch drivers on either side.

I spotted the guy twice on the same day turning it manually.

There's at least one in Portsmouth that can get you one of 4 ways front or back, north or south. It is a Truvelo in the centre of the road. The marks on forward approach are the 3 thin stripes and the more traditional grid markings for rear shots. Gets turned frequently and seems to slow everyone down to about 20 just in case, the limit is 30.

Ok I think i understand now, there are some tar lines in the road about 30 feet in front of the box (but no other visible markings and certainly no white lines)
so this sort of camera works off an induction loop rather than the original procedure of taking 2 pictures to prove the distance travelled between the 2 flashes

I won't post a google streetview link but you can clearly see the camera on the A249 Sittingbourne road just before the Detling Hill Jade's crossing going from the M20 towards Detling. Obviously a dangerous spot and a camera is fully justified.
I was just interested in knowing if there actually was a camera fitted because, if it is purely for deterrence, I could not see the point of turning it round to face oncoming traffic, as we all slow down anyway. However, it is more effective if we slow down in advance of the camera rather than as we pass it, because of where the actual road crossing point over the dual carriageway is located just after the camera
  • The up hill side of Detling hill has a Truvelo camera and the downhill side has a Gatso (after the bendy bit in the 50 limit). There are lots of Truvelo cameras in Kent that can do front or rear pictures. The truvelo camera only has 3 white lines close together for front pictures.

    Yes they do.

You know of a forward facing camera which flashes a bright white light straight in the eyes of the driver whilst speeding??

Yes all of them do but it's more of a pinky colour than white. It's an internet myth that they use infra red flashes.

    Thanks

never heard of Truvelo, but then again I don't speed (around cameras :D) so have never bothered to find out until now
I noted the 3 lines this morning now that you mention them
