The free from food section in te supermarket is cheaper to buy than paying £7.20 per item. Plus, there is lso food in the spermarket (such as rice) that you can also buy.

The one that inherited this system and have only been in for 5 minutes?? What an odd thing to say!

Do you and your mum get housing benefit/council tax relief?

Hi everyone i am posting this thread as i got a very annoying letter today explaining that i am not entitled to any benefits.....
I am off work on the sick have been for 3 months suffering with coeliac disease and other problems i have never been off work this long since i was 16. My illness means i have to buy special foods and also have to pay £21 a month on prescriptions i am only receiving £78 pounds a week ssp and as you can imagine have bills to pay out of that.
Yes i live with my mum who only works part time due to her health problems also but to cut a long story short i want to work but at the moment cant and apparently the government will only help me if i had a child is what the lady said on the phone i am disgusted they are quick enough to take your tax and national insurance.... I am also sick of hearing how unemployed people who have been on income support receive £250 just to go back to work and also free clothing up to £100 in dorothy perkins for their interview plus everything else what a joke this government is so bad !!!!!!!

If you want a decent income when on sick you need sickness insurance or income protection or to be working for a decent company providing decent sickness pay.

You will probably not be eligble for ESA so be prepared for even tougher times if you don't get back to work.

Regarding why SSP and ESA are so low - the answer is simple - there are 2 many people relying on benefits and abusing the system and because their neighbours were not calling benefit fraud line now there is not enough money left.

This governement (still) and the last government are the govenrments spending the most enourmous amount of money on social security and benefits ever known in british history, therefore the problem is unlikely to be the government, but the claimants and the sick note culture.

Sorry for asking, but why can't you work ? I work with a coeliac and she works full time. She's been really ill over the years but once she got her diet sorted out, she's been great. It doesn't have to be expensive. She makes her own bread now. There are loads of recipes on the internet. She only eats out at places she knows caters for coeliacs and is just very careful about her diet.

Are you not in a position to work even part time?

SSP doesn't go far, like the other posts have stated it is so important to self insure rather than rely on the state to pay for everything.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

When I was on SSP I got free prescriptions because I had a low income. I got the form HC1 from Job Centre plus.

Sorry as a newbie I cant post links but google HC1 form or free prescriptions on a low income.

    Interesting question.

I am more interested in the answer.

People with coeliac disease usually improve within weeks markedly after they start gluten free diet.

May be the reason is not health related, but he is looking after his mum.

  • You dont have to buy "special" food at all, just foods not containing gluten. Of which, surprisingly, there are many - ever heard of fruit, vegetables or meat for a start? I hope youre a troll, because otherwise you need a severe wake up call.

I have wheat intolerance (I can have some things the OP can't) and have found that I can have most foods. it's just things like bread, pasta and biscuits that I can't have.
