Dear Smudger1946,

Sorry to hear about your keyboard woes. Here is a quick thing to try. If you have or can get hold of a USB keyboard, plug it into your laptop and see whether all the keys work on that. If so, your laptop keyboard is faulty. It is unusual for this to become an issue, but not impossible.

I don't know where you are in the country, but if your keyboard is faulty, it is normally possible to get hold of a replacement part, and fitting is usually done within an hour. If you plan on £35 for the part, and £35 labour, you would not be far off.

If you need any further help, then by all means either PM or email me simon@griggs.dyndns.biz

I hope this helps.

Regards

Simon.

I'd take a guess that maybe the ribbon cable isn't properly seated in the connector. If it isn't that then either the keyboard or its associated electronics are dodgy. Hope it's the former because a quick google should show you how to get the keyboard out from your specific lappy and reseat the connecting ribbon cable.

If that fails you could try to persuade wherever you got it that a laptop really should last more than a year (sale of goods act or some such - check one of the consumer rights boards here).

Cheaper to buy a new keyboard surely.

£35 is about the going rate for a laptop keyboard, and if you aren't comfortable with taking a laptop apart then you'll have to pay the labour to have it fitted as well.

Many thanks for advice, spoke to someone on phone from pc world and they said a ball park figure of £200 to fit new keyboard.

I can follow instructions on how to fit a keyboard if someone would tell me how?
Thanks again to all

Google can and possibly even YouTube. I did have a quick google and with your laptop it looks like there are some clips that need pushing in along the top edge. Once that's done it will pivot out and you'll see the ribbon cable. They are a tad delicate but unless you are especially ham fisted you should be able to disconnect it at each end and refit it. If that does nothing then it is probably new keyboard time unless you fancy your luck arguing the toss with the place you bought it as I already mentioned.

Thanks for info, performed surgery today on lappy, to check for dissconnected cable but it seems ok, it worried me a bit as it looks like the ribbon cable is glued to keyboard or am i missing something?
Cant see any £35 keyboards though for sale on the net!

Plenty on eBay for £15 and up, make sure you get a UK one and not US though.

Good to see PCW are at the cutting edge for Customer Service!

£200 to fit a new keyboard, I am clearly in the wrong business. Smudger, it takes less than ten mins to remove the keyboard from most laptops, so that is £1200 an hour, anyone else want to setup a business changing keyboards lol!
