making a credit card payment via A&L OLB

right, I have been messing around for months now, transferring money from my A&L account to my old HSBC account so I can make credit card payments. The problem I have is setting up a new payee with A&L online banking only gives me the option of account number and sort code - now I have sort codes on the credit card giro payment slips, but I dont think the account number is the same as my credit card number (certainly for paying an A&L credit card you have to put a specific account number in and the CC number as the customer reference). Does anyone else here pay CC bills with A&L online banking, and if so where do you find the account number you need?

Cheers

If you speak with the card company just ask them what information you need to pay and they should let you know whats what

Why not use the same details (sort code, account number, & 16 digit card number*) you currently use, when making the payment from your HSBC account?

    * My A&L payment system allows me to enter a 'reference'. I can't understand why you say yours doesn't.
  • Yes I've paid credit card bills with A&L online banking.

As other posters have said, you'll need to ring your credit card number and ask them for the account number and sort code that you'll need - just explain what you're trying to do, they'll know what to tell you, it's a common enough question.

Then when you set up the payee with A&L, enter your credit card number as the reference.

YB, no idea about HSBC but with Natwest online banking when you first set up a payee you do so by choosing your credit card provider/utility provider etc from a (very long and exhaustive) list, then all the information you need to provide is your credit card number.

A&L don't have this system so you suddenly realise you need to find out the account number and sort code yourself. I assume HSBC is much the same as NW so the OP hasn't had this info before.

But the account number and sort sode must still be shown in the past payment history - surely? This was why I suggested to use the same details, since the OP appears to be already making payments via HSBC.

I believe MBNA run the same account number and sort code for all their cards, so I think we'll find that the correct details are 08-61-30 and 70328725 (which is what I use for my Virgin card). Indeed, if I search my own banks EIGER database for these details, then the A&L credit card is 'found'.

Barclays also has this, but on the one or two occasions I had cause to pay for something by bank transfer, I found the account details did not match up with the ones I had been provided with, so I ended up having to go back and do it manually anyway.

yep, I didnt have the account numbers before when I paid with my hsbc account - you just select the payee from a long list and you dont get to see the details behind it. I will ring the cc companies up and get the details if thats the easiest way to get them, although I did notice today that I can make payment on my HBOS card from the their website via a debit card payment (I'd just rather push all payments from one place rather than pull them from several other websites)

No, I've just checked on NW online banking. I genuinely can't access the sort code or account number of where any of my credit card payments go to, at least not via my bank statement or payee details. All I can see in payee details is the name of the card issuer and my own reference number.
