Florence : 4 Days from 21/09/06 : Any tips please?

Going on a 4 day break, would really appreciate any tips for either special places to eat (love Italian food) or must see places. We are staying approx 6 minutes away from the railway station...Thank you all in advance :j

Don't miss the Uffizi gallery. Think you can book your entrance in advance and avoid the queues. The walls are packed tight, so they limit the numbers and on my first visit ... I queued for over 2 hours, but it was worth it.

Wander, wander wander ... and remember to look up!

Never had a bad meal there, but expect to pay more the nearer you are to the real tourist spots.

    Enjoy.

For a good meal, go south of the river to the Oltrarno (means the "other side of the Arno") into the Piazza San Spirito. Make sure that at the end of the meal you ask for a "Vin Santo" (pronounced "veen santo") - a fortified wine served with cantucci - almond biscuits. Mmmmmmmmmmm. :D

Make sure that you get up to the Piazzale Michaelangelo. Not only do you get a wonderful view of Florence (either walk up or get bus no. 12 up to the top from the station), but DH proposed to me there. Just a bit further up the road from there is the Church of San Minato (sp?) which is where Collodi, Pinnocchio's creator, is buried.

You HAVE to go to the church of Santa Croce. A couple of semi-famous people are buried there, like Michaelangelo and Galileo.

Definitely agree with the tip to visit the Uffizi. Please make sure you book though, even though it costs a little more than queuing up. I went at a "quiet period" and queued for 2 hours! I was there well before opening too.

Another wonderful one to go to, and surprisingly less crowded, is the Accademia Gallery. That's where the ginormous sculpture of Michaelangelo's David is.

Have a WONDERFUL time and send Florence my love.

PS I agree with flower11, just wander........ it's one of the best cities for this!
