most people don't select their lunchtime sandwich on the basis of its price - they pick one that they actually want to eat.
Well more fool them then. If you're at work 261 days, minus 20 holidays, minus 8 bank holidays, that's 233 days. Just a £2 saving/day is £466/year. There are better ways to enjoy £466 than a sandwich filling.

may be I should go and look for a job in the land of opportunity (Oz) - does anyone have any contacts out there?!
They won't have me. Nor will the US, Canada, or NZ. Ageist barstewards.... Generali might have some contacts.... although what self-respecting aussie will want to be in the contact book of somebody who cycles to work, it's probably a bit girly for them... I've heard they're all rough and ready.

I don't know - some of us find what makes a person attractive can be 'seen' without looking at them and think those who pass judgment based on appearance as somewhat shallow.
You're missing out on the excitement of finding me attractive for starters!
    I think....

depends how much cash you have to spend and what you like i guess. not much point working all day if you can't have a decent feed. if it was choice between a decent lunch and having underwear i suppose i might cut back on the lunch a bit.

My alcohol spend is £0 over the past 16 years.

In fact have probably only spent about £20 in total, the year I was 18. Overindulged a little when I was 18, not to the point of hospital, but enough to promise myself never to drink the stuff ever again. It also tastes minging from what I remember; bitter, sour or sharp. I'm glad I never acquired a liking for it.

Also I don't like how it often turns people really nasty. I don't think I'm missing out on much by being teetotal.

I don't think you are, either. I reckon I drink about 5-10 units a year, rarely more than one a day. Sloe gin is nice, though!

How do you define "minimum acceptable standard of living"?

For some, having money to buy enough food and having a place to live is minimum standard.

For someone else, unless he gets a foreign holiday every year and drives a luxury car, it is life not worth living.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
