Final Bills

My now ex rental agency is asking us for the final bills of the utilities at our previous residence. No real problem there as they are all in credit, but since they are in my name and the landlord wouldn't be liable for them if I didn't pay, are they justified in requesting a copy of my final bills? After all they are a private matter between me and the companies involved.

  • I can't see why they want the actual bills, just give them the final readings.

i can understand it - as a landlady, i cannot tell you how many hours of my life, neigh weeks !!, i have spent between one tenant and another, talking to utilities, or listening to their darned music, if i had final bills, if makes my life so much easier to get supplies changed from one tenant to another one.

ocassionally, a tenant may also try to "underestimate" their final reading (not saying you have done this btw !!) and the final bill does help with these actual readings.

Not sure I understand. When we rented the property, we moved our supply over, so whoever was the provider was irrelevant to me. I think all the properties I've rented had a letter addressed "To the occupier", so there was nothing for the landlord to arrange either. In fact, the landlord has every incentive to disassociate himself from the energy supplier to shield himself from that sort of problem.

a landlord is responsible for the supply if no tenant is living in the property - and so if tenants do not act responsibly when leaving - (In terms of final meter readings etc) it is up to the landlord to sort it out.

i was Actually meaning that the Utilities, generally, seem incapable of transferring one meter reading successfully from one account to another during change of tenants, and its even worse if tenants have then changed suppliers also - that complicates the appalling admin systems even further, as it seems to take 6 weeks to change suppliers !!

i have been almost taken to court twice, - wrongly i may add, by utilities, when new tenants have not forwarded mail onto me from utilities who were chasing both me and the ex-tenant. it is the part of my business that i dislike the most.
  • We've always been asked for final bills when we've moved out of a rental property. It's usually been to confirm that we have tied up all the loose ends before we leave and to get our full deposit back. I've never had a problem doing this.
  • I've sent faxes or photocopies in the past. I assume it's just for their records.

    Nothing to worry about ;)
