Screen problem?

Yesterday suddenly my laptop screen became filled with coloured squares and zigzags. I turned off and the same thing happened again.
This morning when switching on similar happened and I turned off again. When I next switched on, the system tried to diagnose the fault and did a restore.
The screen has been alright since then but am concerned what could have caused the problem, as nothing like this has ever happened before.
I use a Sony Vaio VGN FZ21Z which is around 2.5 years old. Am using Windows 7.
Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused this? Am concerned that it may be a hardware problem that is becoming faulty.
Thank you for any help.

Hi there
The very fact that the system detected an error and did a restore would point towards a software error rather than hardware. In your shoes, I would be backing up all my photos, documents, videos and music just to cover for if "the worst" happens. In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -
Thanks oscar, have already backed up files etc.
The problem hasn't occurred since, never had a similar fault happen before.0 -
You didn't mention your antivirus setup/status.
Do everything it says here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1332690 -
Thanks king. I have AVG antivirus installed, and have since run the programme to check for viruses. Thankfully none found.
I didn't suspect a virus as I don't know of any virus which would cause similar problems. Suspected either screen or hard drive becoming faulty initially, due to nature of the problem.
However, have saved the link and will hopefully go through the advice.
Thank you0
