speeding...but I wasn't!
last week I pulled onto main road and saw speed van parked in layby nearby, I only went to local shop then came home, way before the layby I slowed down and was doing less than 30mph when I passed the van, but i've now had a letter to say I was doing 36mph
what can I do?

Not a lot sadly. The speed van as you call it, is pointing a speed gun at you. It can record your speed from a considerable distance. So it was the speed registered when gun 1st aimed at you, not your speed as you passed the van. In future, if you are over the speed limit when you notice a speed detector vehicle in the distance, it is probably too late to slow down and escape a ticket.0

sorry, when I said I slowed way before the layby I mean the van wasn't even in sight
I came into the 30mph area and then slowed down even further
I never speed at all but knowing the van was there I went even slower0 -
Given that the laser gun that is being used in the van can read the speed of vehicles in as little as 0.3sec and at a range of up to 999m relying on the old Mark 1 eyeball is not necessarily the best policy. At 36mph, depending on what area you are in and assuming that you have not previously attended a course in the last 2 years you are likely to be offered a speed awareness course. This will cost you the same as a fixed penalty but has no points attached to it and will require you attending a (usually) 4-hour gentle indoctrination session with tea and biscuits. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -
Blah blah therefore you must have been speeding.
See speedtrap bible website and pepipoo for more information.Happy chappy0 -
Same happened to me recently. You sure you didnt go past it/see it, think you were out of range and perhaps speed up? Caught going, not coming back?
Better doing what Tom sugggests, all you'll get here is a couple of helpful posts mixed in with a lot of judgmental comments.0 -
i've previously been on a speed awareness course, cost £95 and was a day long thing, class room work in morning lunch provided then out in the instructors car for the afternoon. Works out cheaper in the long run as you wont have to pay the increase of insurance premium for next 5 years0

Personally if you really dont think you were speeding fight it.
I hate that fact it's your guilty and have to prove your innocence.
Google this and it should bring lots of websites up. give them a read and then send a letter challanging what they have said.I get what i want. That isn't because i'm a brat or spoilt. It's because i'm determined, i work hard for it and i achieve my goals!0 -
Will someone please think of the children?0

Im expecting one through the post any day now, I was too busy watching the idiot driving 2 inches from my rear end and looking for a place to pull into the left hand lane to even think about my speedo or to notice the talivan hidden behind a large road sign... When I finally pulled over the left and noticed the talivan, I looked down and was doing (on my speedo) 58-60 in a 50.
I wonder how many innocent motorists he caught that day.... He sure as hell didn't catch the idiot behind me or the guys who speed past the schools on my route to work.
If they wanted to catch bad drivers they'd have more patrol cars, so it's only about revenue really.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

pepipoo for the best advice. There are plenty of instances when the so called evidence is unsecure.0
