If you have credit you currently don't use then close it. Lenders look to see how much credit you already have and if they see you have access to 8,000 they will ask themselves - Why does this applicate need our credit and could decline of the back of that.0

Have you moved a lot in the past few years?
Yes.
Does anyone know if there is any way to find out the particular requirements for each credit card before applying? (how long should you have lived in the one address etc.)?
Since applying for a card and being declined negatively affects your score, it would be nice to avoid the risk of a decline beforehand.0 -
mutty.i applied for tesco credit card lastnite about 8pm and got declined instantly.checked my credit files today(which are excellent) and rang up,they told me a search had not even been done.advised to ring tesco which i did and they told me they update there records and do maintenance work of an evening so it would of been declined.it would of been helpful to no that earlier as i worried all night about unneccasary footprints left on files.so applied again this afternoon got accepted instantly.maybe you should try again after you checked your files to see if they have done a search.

I just applied ten minutes ago for this and got instantly declined. Probably my credit-to-income ratio and my age. I am also the kind of person who either pays off in full every month or takes a good whack off it each month. Have lived at current address all my life and on electoral roll to.
Oh well, no point trying anywhere else or it will mess up something.

Best to leave open. In this credit crunch era it is more difficult to obtain new credit. With me I am always receiving good promo offers whether to bt or to my bank account.0 -
You could always appeal ... I did and they changed their mind, just sent banks statements and credit card statements for the past 6 months0

I notice that you mention you're a new teacher?
How long have you been currently in employment for?
I'm wondering if one of the reasons is because you haven't got a long history with your employer?0
