E-mail won't send

I have 2 e-mail addresses, 1 with tiscali and 1 with virgin.
I had the tiscali account when I was using dial up years ago and have had the virgin one ever since and have used them as my ISP for years but have always been able to receive my tiscali emails through outlook and more recently, windows mail.
I have recently moved house and moved we have BT broadband here. I assumed that I would still be able to send and receive from my virgin and tiscali e-mail addresses. However, I can receive the tiscali ones but can't receive the virgin ones at all and can't send from either account unless I do it via webmail.
I have changed the outgoing settings to the BT account settings but I still can't send anything.
I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong or if I simply shouldn't be able to send and receive from e-mail addresses that I no longer pay money to the providers.
Sorry, if this seems really obvious to some of you.

When you closed your account with Virgin, they'll have wiped your email address so consider that gone.
You can receive from Tiscali but you can't use their servers to send as you're connecting through BT so on the Tiscali account, you need to set the SMTP server address to the same one as the BT account.
What would be far better is to get an email address from Hotmail, GMail, GMX or any of the many free providers. That way, they're not ISP reliant and when you change ISP, you don't lose them or need to change any settings.0 -

I don't understand people who use their ISP's email addresses. It asks for trouble when you want to change ISPs. There are so many independent free email provider (GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail,...). It's never guaranteed that you can keep using them.
BT doesn't seem to allow using their SMTP server with a non-BT email address and Virgin and Tiscali don't seem to allow using their POP/IMAP server from certain networks.
So you have two options, keep using webmail or get a GMail or any other free email address.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
At least I can still receive my tiscali e-mails which was the main e-mail address.
I will definetely be getting a non isp reliant e-mail address. Will it be OK to set up with windows mail or outlook or do I have to go through webmail?0 -
Gmail is quite easy to setup and your mail can be accessed online or using most email clients including Windows mail and Outlook.
You can also use the same account to retrieve mail from your old Tiscali account with the Google mail fetcher.

Edited to add: If you are no longer a Tiscali customer it is only a matter of time before they delete that account too.
It is definitely time to back up your email addresses etc from the Tiscali account and start telling all your contacts and companies you deal with your new Gmail address!
