Costco - worth joining

Options
We've got a brand new costco opening and I can join for £50! I just wanted to ask is it worth joining do you think. I don't want to have to bulk buy huges amounts of everything just to save a copper or two. When we had a Makro I used to go about once or twice a year and the only real money saving was on the specials I personally found.

I would really value your views/experiences.

Costco isn't always much cheaper for some of the stuff they sell (like some of booze) BUT for me the membership is worth it just for bulk buying the meat. It's superior in quality to the supermarket and cheaper. I think it might be cheaper than the butcher but I guess that might vary from butcher to butcher.

You could ask for a pass to have a look around, just go to the desk and ask for one (but you can't buy until you are a member).

I brought one a few weeks ago. I'd actually previously been a member and so knew what was cheaper or not. There were some things sold in there that I was having trouble finding elsewhere and so was good just for that. I definitely agree about their cakes - you can get one that's double the size of supermarket ones, have it personalised and all for the same price! When I go there are always free tasters to try, so if you go at lunch time you can almost get a free meal out of it too. What can be good is going with a friend, so you share the lower costs and don't end up with having a huge bulk buy each time you go.
  • I have just recieved a card from them asking me to join there are 3 memberships £20 Trade membership £50 Executive and £25 individual all plus vat they have sent me a preview pass to look around - no buying and a coupon for a free snack in the cafe.
I wonder If you email them asking for info on joining they might send you the same. www.costco.co.uk

My POV - cakes, bakery bagels etc VERY decently priced and tasty I think,
milk is a lot cheaper than the super markets 6pts about £1.50/£1.70
Books are usually cheaper in the supermarket,
home stuff is very good quality, some is very high end with a high price tag but still often cheaper than if you bought the same elsewhere. Canned food and crisps can often be cheaper in the supermarkets.
Fruit and veg is very good quality, not always cheaper than the supermarket but can be worth it as tastes much nicer.
Cafe's good too for a cheap lunch (pizza/jacket potato etc)

the best bit is the monthly offers (they'll send you a booklet each month) these usually work out much cheaper, things like loo roll its worth waiting for them to have an offer and stocking up

I think it is worth the membership.

Just be aware that not everything is cheaper especially when the supermarkets have BOGOFs etc.

You can often find things there that are not sold anywhere else.

They sometimes do some fantastic reductions to clear stuff you will know when something is reduced when the price ends with a 77.

They do not always stock the same things and they change around with the seaons very quickly so if you want something buy it when you see it as it may not be there the next time you go.
