Again thanks for all your replies.

I completely accept that if I earn any money whatsoever then this will come off my JSA - it would be crazy otherwise. Of course I would prefer a full time job but at the moment that isn't possible. However, one small step...

The main concern I have is that if I take up this offer of the part time job that my housing benefit / council benefit will be affected or will not be paid at all.

Could someone just confirm that if I am not earning more than the JSA amount it should be OK - or not?

    Thanks.
If you are on a low income you can still eligible for HB, I can't see if you are not earning anymore than your JSA why you wouldn't be eligible for HB.

So long as your weekly income from working is no more than £10 above the amount of JSA you are entitled to then there will be no effect at all on your HB/CTB. At the hours you will be working (12 hours, but the important part is it must be below 16) and the earnings you will be receiving you will still get some JSA as well as your current amount of HB/CTB.

Of course I agree that working yourself out of debt and unemployment is the way forward.

But come on, please be serious this guy will be working for 12 hrs pw for a gross wage of £78, yet he would be, at the very most, £5 better off.

In this economic climate, full time, reasonably paid jobs are a little thin on the ground.

Your comment seems to imply that the state of this country has been caused by people who are genuine claimants, be it sickness or unemployment benefit. Rubbish!!! They have done nothing wrong! Why don't you look to the real cause of our dire financial state - greed of those that want more & more & more that already earn more in a year than most would in 5 years.

Yes work yourself out of your own situation but for goodness sake give them a chance to see that it makes good financial sense - £5 doesn't!

Better off, is better off. moreso when you earn the money rather than expecting the state to pay (general comment, not directed at OP.)

I have no intention of arguing with you over the rights and wrongs. If he is able to claim the benefit, then he has the legal right to do so.

The moral aspect does not come into it, why should it? Don't try and make him feel guilty about claiming benefit. He has a right to seek the maximum support that the state will offer him.

On the other hand working for £10 (not £5 - my mistake) for 12 hours is ridiculous. What you seem to be saying is that he should work for his benefit money!

The government have this wrong - make it worth his while to find a job - make sure he feels good financial advantage in doing so. Not £10 - come on be serious!!
