spam email sent from my own email account?

I received an email this morning in my spam folder that looks like it has been sent from my own yahoo email address. I didn't open it, I just read the subject which looks like it's trying to sell Viagra. I'm now worried about my email account and was hoping someone could help me.

I've just completed a full Norton scan but that only found tracking cookies and I've now updated and started a full scan with Malwarebytes which is still running. I've changed my yahoo password and deleted the email from my spam folder. Is there anything else I should do? I'm worried that someone has got into my emails. I used a really strong password, I'm very careful online and don't visit any dodgy websites. The only thing I can think of is that I stupidly posted this email address on a website and I think that's where they must have got my address from. I've also left that email logged in for 2 weeks instead of logging straight out, which I realise now was a bad idea.

My other email addresses (none of them are yahoo) seem to be fine. I haven't posted them anywhere and I log out of them straight away. Should I make a new email address and just delete this one now?
Any help would be really appreciated.

Might not be anything to worry about. Spammers can use any email address they want and one way to bypass spam filters is to spoof your email address, so you get an email from "yourself". If you kept the email you could have confirmed the yahoo sender domain "domain keys" and my guess is that the domain keys wouldn't be verified.
Spam usually won't have domain keys verified since the sender cannot be verified.

I get these types of emails too (from myself)

*edit my misunderstanding, I read Yahoo mail above and thought that you had spam in your Yahoo account, hence the domain keys info.

Is the email in your 'sent' folder? If not then it's not come from your account, it's just address spoofing. if you've changed the password as a precaution then that's about all you need to do.

  • I've just checked the sent folder and the email isn't in there. So, it was address spoofing then? I was worried I'd got a virus or my email had been hacked or something! It's never happened before. Thank you both for your help :)

The full Malwarebytes scan has just finished and that hasn't found anything either. I'm still thinking about deleting the address and making a new one just to be safe. Would it be possible to transfer my emails from yahoo to another address? I'm sorry if that's a silly question but I'm not sure how it all works!

I'm not sure that would help matters. My spam folders on all my email accounts catch spam email that I allegedly sent to myself - I suspect that you'd just have the same 'problem' with your new address.
