Broken Laptop: How Much Would Repair Cost?

Don't know if anybody would be able to help me with this query, but here goes:
My Acer Aspire Laptop has broken. The two thing wrong with are: (a) one of the hinges connecting the screen to the base has snapped off; (b) some of the keyboard letters had faded away through constant use.
Unfortunately, my Warrantry has now expired (couldn't afford to renew it through financial difficulties), and so when I ran Acer, they told me that just for the initial admin and takeaway, it could cost me £54.00. But then there would be the additional cost of the actual parts replacement, for which they could not give me an estimate until the work had been done.
So what I want to know is this: how much do you think the total charge would be for the replaced keyboard and screen? If it is too pricey, do you think I would be better off getting a new laptop off the catalogue, and make sure the warrantry is sufficiently covered?

Acer hinges breaking is a common issue. New screen £150 to £200. In the long run it would be cheaper to get a new laptop, later OS, more upto date, warranty etc.0

have you checked out ebay laptop parts and spares section quite often u can find replacement keys and hinges for screens if you look in the correct section. Failing that try to pop into your local computer shop and ask for an estimate from them.

Hi. Thanks for your advice on the broken hinges on my Acer Aspire laptop screen. That is quite expensive to repair, and I think you are right in saying that I would be better off getting a new laptop (it'd have to be off the catalogue, as I am unemployed at present). My problem, now of course, is picking a laptop that would be even better than the Acer one. One failing about the Acer machine is that PC games run very slowly on it - and often not at all. So could anybody recommend a good laptop that would perform just as well as a powerhouse PC desktop machine?
Also, the 17" Acer screen has caused me a lot of eyestrain, so if I downgraded to a 15" screen, would that be more easy on the eye?Inner_Zone wrote: »Acer hinges breaking is a common issue. I purchased a 6 month old Acer Aspire One laptop from eBay for £120 with the receipt, i plan to register for the extended warranty.
I sold my old toshiba U300 laptop for over £92 on ebay which was faulty, so ive spent a little over £45 to replace the laptop.
There are some bargains out there, you just need to find them. I dont know how much you could get for your laptop, but you just need to list it & take the chance..0 -
I would charge:
Keyboard - if it were a few keys, replace those that need doing for £3 a key or a full keyboard for around £20
Hinges - they're typically around £20-£40 OTTOMH
In addition to the parts above, there is labour. The whole lot can be done in an hour.
So I'd expect the job to cost between £60-£90 depending on cost of parts.
TBH, there's nothing that you can't repair yourself. Hinges are easy, as are keyboards and there's plenty of howto guides on the interwibble.0
