Reading an electricity meter

I have an electricity meter that appears to be faulty in that it is not possible to display the meter reading. The meter is an EDMI Mk10 installed by Bglobal Metering. It should be possible to use the Display Settings button to cycle through the displays including displaying the meter reading but it will only display the time in hours/minutes/seconds. E.on say that they are receiving smart meter readings from Bglobal remotely even though their billing system is only set up at present to bill me on estimated readings.

E.on have talked me though button pressing routines on the phone but the display does not alter and does not display the meter reading. At present they are unwilling to send out anyone to check or change the meter. So the question is (1) is there something that I have overlooked in operating the meter, and (2) is it a legal requirement for the user to be able to read their electricity meter?

    1. Sounds like the meter has been programmed incorrectly you should be able to cycle though the display to get the kWh reading.

    2. Yes.

The meter is their responsibility. Since they've done nothing you could contact the electricity watchdog

My electricity company https://www.ecotricity.co.uk told me my meter is their responsibility. I switched to them from eon & I got lots of phone calls begging me to return. I'm glad I left. The customer service is a lot better too.

I would insist they sort it out, they could be billing you anything they wish and you could not verify it from your meter, tell them you want the ability to double check the meter readings for yourself.

    Hi neilsedaka,

If a meter is not functioning correctly, then we should send someone out to inspect it and if necessary fix or replace the meter.

I’d contact E.ON again and state that you require an appointment as you can not keep track of your readings due to the meter not displaying the meter readings.

If you still find the agent is unwilling to book the appointment, contact me and I will be happy to arrange this for you.

Thanks for the helpful responses. The matter is now pretty much resolved because Bglobal have remotely (by magic) changed the display so that the meter permanently displays the meter reading instead of the time. I don't really have a need to cycle through the other displays at present.
