ntl and caller display

any ideas folks??

I need caller display as I am being plagued by telephone calls from my elderly neighbour and keep missing business calls in the process
NTL tell me its not available where I am and using the answer phone as a call minder is not very good either.

has anyone got any other ideas?

Get a separate line for the business?

I believe NTL only charge £25 to install a second line.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

i really didn't want to do that as i am now working for my husband's new business and the costs for the phone lines in the factory is awful so the idea was to work from home and save some money !!!

The only other possibility is, if your home has previously had a BT line installed, you may be able to get it reconnected free.

I don't know the ins and outs of porting numbers from NTL to BT but, at least, a BT line would give you Caller Display (free of charge too if you make 6 outgoing chargeable calls on BT in the course of a quarter).

Below is the relevant reconnection FAQ taken from here:-
Can I keep my current phone number?
Yes, if you currently have your telephone services provided by another company, eg, a cable operator, then we should be able to transfer your number to your new BT account.

All you need to do is tell us:
    • What company you are using
    • Your existing account number
You won't be charged for this transfer. We'll liaise with your current cable provider to ensure that you do not have a break in service.

If, for any reason, we cannot transfer your number to BT, we will give you a new number for free.

I transferred my number from ntl to BT just to get Caller ID; wish I'd done it years ago. Very easy process, one call to BT and they sort it all out. One call from ntl to persuade me to stay:
ntl: "What can we do to make you stay?!
    me: "Caller ID"
ntl: "sorry, can we persuade you to keep broadband"
me: "is that possible without a phone line?"
ntl: "Yes, if you have had a phone line in the past. I can offer you half price broadband for a year"
    me: "Great!"

So back to BT with the phone and half price broadband.

Slight nuisance is that some phone companies eg Talk, talk will recognise you as a non-BT customer and not offer you things available to BT line holders.

  • If you move an original cable number to BT your face problems if you wont to CPS your calls to another supplier.(Its ok if the number originated with BT in first place and was ported to cable, and your porting it back.)
