I’m surprised as well that you weren’t aware and were “shocked” to find it was a CW only configured aircraft.
This is the major selling point, and has been since they launched the route last year.
The immigration clearance in Ireland is also something that has been talked about a lot in the media.
I haven’t done the route eyt but I will at some point purely to try it out.
The disadvantage is the lack of a lounge at LCY but you can arrive 30 minutes before your flight.
Also, not sure I would want to be stuck in an A318 across the atlantic during rough weather...
As already mentioned reason for the refuel at Shannon is due to the runway length at LCY, hence why the return JFK-LCY flies direct with no stop.0 -
Well, MSE, I too am just a little surprised that you apparently had no prior knowledge of the CWLCY service! IMO it is BA's jewel in the crown. It even bears the same flight numbers as BA's previous jewel, Concorde.
As pointed out, the SNN stop is a virtue as it takes care of US Immigration and Customs on the way, and the London City to New York journey time compares favourably with the dreaded Heathrow experience and and associated immigration queues in New York.
As for 50 seats - golly, gosh, it has just 32, count them, 32 seats and is as near to a private plane experience as mere mortals are likely to experience. Even on a full plane, there is so much room!
Another virtue is that the service is operated by BA's Gatwick staff, so no risk of BASSA deciding that you won't be travelling.0 -
For those asking about my shock... the reason's simple - i don't normal travel business class and only did becuase of my BA Miles. There was no choice in flight it was the only one available so simply opted for that reason.Martin Lewis, Money Saving Expert.

Martin,
Can I suggest www.flyertalk.com as a good place to get some tips on free flights, including business and even first class! Your post has already tickled the fancy of a few of the regulars there and I think I recognise a few of them here today! :beer:0 -
I was actually asking Martin
I know - but I'm more likely to reply (and still haven't booked anything)!MSE_Martin wrote: »For those asking about my shock... the reason's simple - i don't normal travel business class and only did becuase of my BA Miles. You probably got the best option anyway!
LCY is a great airport without the hassle of big hubs. Landing at Shannon and clearing customs there is probably quicker than doing it New York itself! (Same thing happens when you come in from some Canadian ports as well, saves time at the end) And of course coming back into LCY means getting your bags in just a few minutes compared to a long walk just to go through immigration an get your bags. Of course if you live on the other side of town that may not be any good to you!
Also it must feel really nice being an all Club World set up! I'd love to do it, but saving my points for a longer trip!! :rotfl:0 -
IF my calculations are correct, I'd guess this NYC trip was to celebrate your 1st wedding anniversary?
IF my brain isn't going doolally, happy (belated) wedding anniverary to Mr and Mrs MSE.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Martin did exactly as I am doing - used his BA Miles + spend a certain amount on his BA AMEX card to get a free companion fare ....
I am off to Jamaica in December BC x 2 for £600 all in .... using BA miles & Amex voucher.
