Some programs will not run?

Running Windows 7 ,upgraded from Vista ,clean install. All working well for 9 month. Then certain programs would not load on screen but would appear in the task manager as though the seem to be running but nothing on screen e.g thunderbird.
have done lots of scans nothing was found.
rolled back a windows update all stated to work for a bit . decided to back up and start over again with a clean install of windows 7, still have the same problem.
when i first did a clean install of win 7 everything was working fine. done the same process and the problem remains. had this problem for a few weeks.
if i clik start , right click computer , properties nothing happens also many thanks

I get that with W7 as well.
Only way I have found around it is to go to task manager, delete the task and run the program again.
Sometimes I get progams running but not showing on the notification area and next time I reboot they are there - all very odd.
Done many different scans myself and PC is clean.
