How to get my direct debit reduced?

Hi all,
I managed to get in arrears with my gas bill (Swalec) to the tune of £900 over the space of 18 months. This house eats gas. Since that last bill I have cut all gas usage to just water heating an hour every morning.
Anyway, my direct debit rose to £195 a month after my last bill (with the £900 arrears) and about 4 months on, it is crippling me.
What can I do? Would I get anywhere calling them to ask to have it reduced? I was stupid not upping my direct debit when I first moved in (it was at £30 a month, same as last smaller house), so I am full of self annoyance but I need help
Thanks

Call them and see what you can negotiate. They usually will allow repayment over the period the debt accrued.
If you really can't afford the repayments, consider getting a pre-payment meter which will probably allow for a reduced repayment plan (i.e spread over a longer period)"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
