Presumably you budgeted for your rent so when the student loan fiasco was finally sorted you not only withheld payment of the rent but did not set the funds aside either?
If you don't formulate a sensible repayment-plan and get the debt-collectors agreement you will be taken to court and you will get a CCJ0 -
only the courts can decide how much interest and fees are payable on the rent debt if the landlorfd wins.. which he will in this case... ... but the figure they quote of £3800 is absurd.... they are trying to frighten you.. thats what debt collectors do... BUT you have to pay the back rent immediately in full and then they will really struggle taking you to court for .... "fines or late payment fees" or whatever else they call these costs
get a bank loan and pay it now... then recognise that you did a really dumb thing that you will never do again.....
welcome to the real world.
having a CCJ will REALLY screw up your life big time for 5-6 years.. you DONT Want one, trust me.....0 -

I feel this to be unjustified and unlawful as i believe that it was an initial breech in tenancy agreement. I do not have a clue where to go from here so any help would be greatly appreciated. xx
You are in the wrong over paying your rent late and over withholding your rent. If you are capable of University level education then you are capable of reading up on both LL and T obligations, prior to signing a tenancy agreement/licence. All Unis provide guides to renting property and they are also freely available from CABs, Shelter, the Council's Private Sector Rentals team etc
However, the debt collection agency appear to be extracting the Michael. Get along to a local CAB asap and get help drafting a * letter* ( not a text, email or phone call) on how you intend to clear what you owe.0
