The Gower - Best campsite

Options
Im going to the gower on 23rd July for 4 days and then onto cornwall.
Im trying to find a campsite and a friend recommended hillend campsite. I had a look but they dont take dogs which is stupid as the beach is voted best dog friendly beach.

Shame the campsite isnt dog friendly.

So now im stuck. I want to go surfing and i dont know which campsite would be best to use.

Anyone have any recommendations.

thank you

Hi try looking on www.ukcampsites.co.uk they have reviews etc of loads of sites. You can do a map search which is excellent, you pick where you want to go and click a buttton it then flags up all sites within a certain radius (which you set) You can then access any reviews.

Cheap, very dog friendly (the owner has four....), fabulous views, not far from Rhossili for surfing and basic (only portaloos and a tap) is Eastern Slade Farm which is listed on the ukcampsites website. Worth booking as it is small and (understandably) popular.

Hi. I live near Gower, so I take advantage of this by frequently camping for long weekends over the summer. Over the years I have visited most campsites on Gower, but my absolute favourite is Beynons campsite, Nicholaston Farm, Penmaen, Gower. I can't post a link, but if you google "beynons campsite gower" it will come up as the first result.

It's a working farm, with a fcouple of fields for tents and touring caravans (it doesn't accept static caravans). The top field backs onto the road (behind a thick hedge), so it's a little noisier although the road is very quiet in the evenings/night, but it does allow you to wake up to a fantastic view of Oxwich bay and Three Cliffs bay.

My dog loves the dog walk, it's at the bottom of the bottom field (which doesn't have such fantastic views as the top field), and involves a short walk downhill along a wooded path, then onto sand dunes, then you find youself on Three Cliffs beach. You can also detour through a couple of fields if your dog can handle stiles! It's a beautiful walk, but does involve quite a steep uphill to get back, so it may not be ideal if your dog is elderly or has limited mobility (or you).

Beynons is not a big comercial site, so it doesn't have a bar, clubhouse or entertainment (which is the way we like it). The farm does have a tea rooms though, which serves really tasty, good value breakfasts (full english = £3.95), as well as home made cakes, smoothies made from their own fruit grown on the farm (they also offer fruit picking - strawberrys are in season at the moment), and locally made ice cream. The shower/toilet block is spacious and is always kepy spotlessly clean, and there are some electric hook-up points available if you need them.

Beynons' isn't the cheapest campsite on Gower (about £13.00 per tent per night in high season), but in my opinion it's very good value and worth every penny. You also need to be aware that you will be asked for a £10.00 security deposit when you arrive, for a key to the barrier to the camping fields. This security deposit is returned when you leave and return the key.

Even if you don'y stay at Beynons, I would still recommend you visit Three Cliffs bay during your stay, it's definately one of the best beaches on Gower, and never too busy as you can't drive there and need to walk the last 1/2 mile (or 1/4 mile if you're comming from the campsite!) it seems to put a lot of people off.

I don't know how familiar you are with Gower, but the other Must Do's in my opinion are:
    • Visit Rhossili and walk across the causeway to Worms Head (don't forget to check the tides on the board first though to make sure you can get back!)
    • Have dinner at The King Arthur, Reynoldston (blackboard specials are great). You will need to book at weekends though as it gets very busy in summer, particularly in good weather when all the outside tables fill up really early.
    • Llangennith is the best surfing (and kitesurfing) beach on Gower so it would be a Must for you!.
    • If your budget allows, and you want something more energetic, Watersports4all at Oxwich bay can help you.
    • Visit Verdis Ice Cream parlour in Mumbles (better than Joe's in my opinion), and stroll along the sea front promenade in Mumbles with your ice cream.
    • Walk along the coast path between Oxwich bay and Port Eynon - fantastic views.
I hope that helps. If you need any more information, please pm me.
