How to stop adverts on email home page?

Hi

I use hotmail and sometimes AOL and Gmail.

On all of these, especially Hotmail, there are those annoying adverts but recently they've started appearing in larger boxes which cover my email inbox so I can't see the text in the inbox.

Sometimes there is a button to close the ad but often there isn't and you just can't see your email.

Please does anyone know how to stop these adverts from appearing or how to re-organise your screen in some way so that the adverts don't encroach on what you do actually want to see!

Many thx for any tips!

I don't use Hotmail but I imagine that by using FireFox with the Adblock Plus plugin you should be able to block these ads and still retain the main content but you may have to tweak the filtering to do so.

I do use hotmail with firefox and Adblock Plus, I haven't got adverts. So this combination seems to be working:)
  • Hi,

Many thanks for the replies, yes it is when I open the inbox.

Even now when I click on an email to read it and you can't read half of the email because the ad is plastered on top if it!!

I do use firefox - pls can anyone run me through where/how to add this add blocker plug in and any changes to settings which I need to make?

    Many thx in advance.

    hiya,
click on tools at the top of your page - get add ons - then look on the list for adblock.
    hope this helps!
  • Fantastic, thank you, I've added the adblock thingammy and that has obliterated the ad so I can actually see and read my emails. Thanks so much to everyone who pointed me in the direction of this.

Adblock+ is the first thing I install when I setup Firefox on somebody's PC.

You can play around with the HOSTS file but by far the simplest option is to use FireFox instead or use a different mail provider. The OP mentioned ads in Gmail but even with no adblock turned on the Gmail ones are not intrusive IMO.
