Hello
I have just moved from Henlow, which is reasonably near Bedford.. and we used Bedford as one of our main shopping towns..
I don't really know Elstow..
Bedford is a strange place.. the town center seems really nice, but quite a lot of nasty things have happened there.. (look up news archives on the bbc)
I'd avoid the area near the train station if possible as there have been some horror stories from near there.. ideally head for the embankment or towards the smaller Tesco (can't remember the name, but not the Extra at Cardington) it's up by frankie and bennies and home base..
Out that side of town seems to be much nicer..
Get your hands on some of the local papers (Bedford on Sunday etc) and read up what's going on in the areas..
Sorry I can't give more advice!

I live in Bedford. As Bexm says, I'd stay away from Queens Park/train station area. I think developers are building there because of the easy access to the station...trying to target commuters. There's too much traffic in the area for a start (and often not enough parking in Queens Park) but it's also where the dodgy characters seem to be. I'd avoid it.
Goldington and Putnoe areas are nice (the north/eastern area of town), Elstow is good too, DH and I were going to view a house there when we were buying...loved the area but unfortunately the current owners were having trouble sorting their new mortgage out so we looked elsewhere instead.0 -
then but they are a lot more expensive!0

Clapham is getting better, bypassed and new private estates but is by far the ugliest of the "Ouse" villages. Houses in Putnoe seem to sell very quickly, but avoid that part where it merges with Goldington, Church Lane, Needwood Rd etc. Queens Park has a lot of "ethnic" shops and is not very desirable. There are large 1990s onwards developments which now connect Elstow to Bedford. I think Moss Lane may be council built.
There is/has been a lot of apartment development on brownfield sites close to town centre. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
