Accepted Payments At Costco?

Once I went to Costco with my sister in law. We got in with my card but she bought a lot so tried to pay. The machine kept giving an error when she tried to pay with her card so I tried mine and it worked.

So regarding payment, if a card is used then does the name on the card have to match the Costco card name? Even if the Costco member is present?

Also do they accept cash? I have always paid by card but if my sister in law wants to go again then it is easier for her to pay in cash than me pay then her pay me back as she always gives me a cheque when she owes me money (and she doesn't use internet banking) & I work nowhere near a bank which is a pain!

  • I went to Costco with a friend and if i remember correctly they accept cash and DEBIT card. They do not accept any credit cards Could that have been what was causing the error?? She has a Costco card and I don't but I never had any problem paying with my Debit card.

My sister in law was using a debit card, she had enough money in her account & put in her pin correct etc but it was declined twice so I thought it might be a name thing.

Did your friend attempt to pay using your membership but her debit card?

Only the named Costco cardholder can pay by cheque or card. If you take anyone with you they will have to pay by cash or you pay by your card.

That's strange. It states on their website that payments only accepted in Costco cardholder's name

  • They are quite strict. I had forgoteen my debit card but had a credit card but could not remember the pin number and despite my shopping history and the offer to leave my wallet with them till i went home and got my debit card i had to leave my trolley full of shopping behind.
The best work is the cheapest as the quality remains long after the price is forgotten
  • I've taken mates in, and in the derby store, named cardholders can use cah or debit cards, non named card users have to use cash.
i havent pushed them on this, but it all seems to work.

I have paid by card on another persons membership (Birmingham Costco) - the card terminal won't be able to tell the difference so it would only be staff being real sticklers for the rules if they declined to take payment from another card.

I asked the checkout this the other day and was told it doesn't matter if the membership card and debit card are in different names.

I went to Costco with a friend yesterday, we both have Costco cards, she paid first. When I paid (with a cheque) the cashier said she didn't need my card because she'd already seen it and knew I was a member, and it was quicker just to do it on my friend's card. My receipt now has her name on it :>)

They only take cash, cheques or debit cards, not credit cards.
