Thunderbird quota root 95% full

Options
I'm running Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 on Windows 7 (IMAP accounts), and a red bar at the bottom says it's 95% full.

Does this mean that I must delete messages? When it gets to 100% will I not be able to receive messages?

I can't find anything on the net about this, except that folders should be compacted to save space. But my server settings are already set to expunge on exit.

I've only got a total of 800 messages in my inboxes.

Would be grateful for any help.

  • I saw that, Calvin, but the only advice it seems to give is to compact the folders. But, as I say above, I think that's already being done.

Who's your email provider? You're quota is almost full there.

You don't need to delete messages. You can just drag and drop them into a local folder in Thunderbird. These messages will be removed from the server, but stay available in your local folder.

Keep in mind that you can't access these emails from another PC anymore and that you include your Thunderbird profile in your backup.
  • Thanks, Tronator. I contacted my email provider and they told me what to do. I added a new pop email account, copied all the messages over, then deleted the IMAP one.

I'd recommend keeping the IMAP account purely because keeping messages on their side too helps as an additional backup. You can use the local folders that thunderbird has and transfer messages there when you get nearer your quota :)

You may also want to look at upgrading to thunderbird 3.1 unless you already have a reason not to :)
  • Ehlo, when (a couple of months ago) I got a new laptop with Windows 7, the Thunderbird I downloaded was the most recent version - but I didn't like it. I can't remember why now. Anyway, I went back to version 2. Even that's different from when I used it in XP and I don't quite understand it - hate the Smart Folders, for a start! (Blonde, middle-aged and female, I'm afraid.)

I don't really get the advice about transferring messages to local folders. (Not sure what that means.) I'm happier with POP accounts so this solution suits me fine.

They just released 3.1 which is supposed to fix some of the issues in 3.0. I can agree with you about the smart folders, but if you press the arrows just above the folder list you can switch from 'Smart Folders' to 'All Folders' and it will be like it was before. Searching is now a lot quicker than it was before.

As for local folders.. I have my main e-mail account listed as well as Local folders which I'm unable to delete. I would send you a screenshot but I'd rather not have to black out various things :)
