  • Went a couple of years ago to the Kyrenia area - very pretty, very friendly people, relatively cheap. Highly recommended.

Not very good with names of places, sorry - think we went west of kyrenia along the coast 15 min drive to a little bay called 'horseshoe bay' - lovely. TBH it was out of high season (sept.) and most places were a bit quieter (I think). Visit the castle/museum in Kyrenia. We stayed villa self-catering so don't know hotels. The restaurents along the road west of Kyrenia seem good.

Oh I remember something that confused us (don't know if they still do it) - cos of the 'size' of the currency there's no very small changes and so as not to cheat you the supermarket near were we stayed gave you sweets (odd at 1st with no explanation! :) ). Spirits (local versions) were about £1 a bottle!

We're off to S. Cyprus tomorrow - hope its as nice and the people as friendly. Would probably tried the other coast of N. Cyprus but I absolutely HATE flying (with the extra landing in Turkey) and also there's few cheap flights. Although I did see on some websites advertising villas to rent in N.Cyprus people offering to pick travellers up from Larnaca?

Hope you have a good time.
  • Been to Northern Cyprus loads of times. It's very peaceful and very beautiful. You can rent self catering villas for a whole week for for reasonable prices and the flights with Cyprus Turkish Airlines are fine. You could also fly with Onur Air. All flights do have to touch town in Turkey but you don't get off the plane. Sometimes you're lucky and get a flight that doesn't bother stopping down but that doesn't happen very often.

The harbour in Kyrenia (Girne) is very nice and can be very touristy at times and unfortunately the prices now reflect that. Be careful that some places list the price in Cyprus pounds from the south - which are more expensive than British Pounds. Some people will quote in British pounds as well so do make sure you know what price you're talking about. Regardless, always take Turkish Lira and pay in Lira so you'll avoid this problem but it's something to keep in mind when you are looking at the prices of things.

Renting a car is very cheap and they will often drop off and collect where you are staying. Nicosia (Lefkosia) is interesting to go to. It's not really nice but it's interesting from a historical point of view and you can really see the diffference between the North and South of the Island and how the north has suffered.

It's also worth a visit up to Bellapais Abbey and St Helarion Castle.

Contact these guys http://www.cyprusgold.com/ for some more information. Huseyin is very helpful and although their website is terribly cluttered, they can help you plan your trip and are very easy to deal with.

Oh yeah, go to the Turkish delight shop in Girne... I wish I could remember it. Ask when you're there. It's a white sign with purple writing... The best turkish delight ever - all hand made and unlike any turkish delight you've ever had! :)

    HTH
  • I loved Northern Cyprus - great people, excellent food and very reasonably priced.

    I stayed here:

Highly recommended - it's a small and fairly quiet place and the Brit/Cypriot couples who own it are helpful and good fun. There were lots of repeat visitors when I went there, which is always a good sign. You can go on a package deal from a tour operator, but when we went it was cheaper to book the hotel and flights directly.

I think it's now possible to fly into the south of Cyprus and go over the border. The taxi drive from the south is obviously longer, but there are more flights to the south, and they are all direct flights. Check with the hotel for the current situation.

To say i love the place would be an understatement, i moved here last year.
if you are looking for a quıet and relaxing hol, steer clear of Kyrenia town still quite busy, though most of the kids have gone home, try https://www.greenislandholidays.com
its currently 38degrees (9pm), though in the daytime we are getting a v nice breeze, the only hotel that is easy distance to Kyrenia with a gorgeous beach is the Acapulco, car hire locally is currently 15-20 per day for an a/c Fiesta or sim, local drivers can be a bit loopy but there are plenty of local sites that make it worthwhile. Last night i went to Aligadi beach (6kms) from town and watched loggerhead turtles hatching (Ahhhhh). PM me for further.
