My mother's house was reposessed back in the 90s and the bank at the time wouldn't let me offer on it until it went through their system and was released to an agent. I realise this may be much different now, but I would start by contacting her mortgage company or her OR if she is bankrupt.
I didn't end up buying mum's house in the end, I was gazumped by my own brother LOL. We are on speaking terms now though. Good luck x:A

For £2 you can search the details at the Land Registry online (pay by credit card) they will tell you who owns it, when they bought it and who any mortgage is with plus other details. You must do the search in office hours.0

A £3 land registry search will tell you who the mortgage was held with. Phone their head office and ask to speak to someone who deals with repossessions. Chances are they will insist on placing it with a local estate agent, so scanning the local press may be useful.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
