Exchanging item with no receipt

I bought my dad a t-shirt from sports direct shop in east kilbride.
It was a medium coat hanger, so assumed it was a medium. After he tried it on it turned out was a small. My fault for not checking I guess.
As it was a present I dont have the receipt. It still has all tags attached. When I took it back to exchange for a larger size I was told I couldnt without a receipt. After a 5 minute arguement with the manager, she said it was company policy and basically tough.
I thought I should be able to exchange and only thought would be a problem if wanting a refund.
Can somebody help me out with this?

You would need a receipt...not that I would accuse you of it for one minute, but clothes shops often have people stealing things, then returning for a refund on the things they've stolen. Or exchanging them to get a receipt and returning after.
Equally, as they do not have to exchange (yes, the hanger was wrong, but the item itself would have had a tag....we fall into a grey area), they can request a receipt.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

We returned some brand new football boots to Sports Direct without a receipt.
However, could show the item on our bank statement, and this was all the proof of purchase they needed. They gave us a gift card in exchange.

I think with Sports Direct, it's up to whether the manager is in the right mood - if they can be bothered, they can check the till logs for a matching transaction.
Otherwise, you would need proof of purchase - which could be a bank statement showing the card transaction (if you paid that way). Legally, they don't really need to do anything for you, unless it's fault on their part. The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.
