Taxi Driving - A great way to get back on your feet

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share a bit of my story with you...

Since being declared bankcrupt a few years back I was really struggling to make ends meet. I had always run my own business since leaving college (which meant little job experience).

So I decided to become a taxi driver. The training is actually quite drawn out in my local area so it took over 4 months to actually get working...

But it was worth it. Taxi driving gives you cash in your hand unlike most other forms of work (ligitimate :rotfl:). The work is easy, but the hours can be long. I would recommend to anyone in the same boat.

I no longer work as a driver as my internet biz is now earning me more, though I still keep my taxi license. You never know when you may need it!!

I hope this helps.

I enquired into becoming a taxi-driver in Norwich. However, the council here hand out licences like confetti -meaning there is virtually nil demand for new taxi-drivers.

Glad it helped you anyway, mate.

How long ago was this? My area used to be the same but they have tightened things up lately. It also depends who you work for

Taxi driving is a mugs game. My uncle had a taxi and operated in a seaside resort. Even in the height of the summer season, he didn't even earn NMW for the hours being done. A mate of mine left lorry driving to run his own taxi. After 4 months, he went back to driving lorries.

Not quite sure what you mean by mugs game. Let us know some alternatives that will allow you to make money and give you time to start a new business?

Taxi driving allowed me to get back on my feet and start a new successful online business.
I agree as a long term income you are never going to get far with taxi driving, but please let me know an everyday job where you work for some else and earn more than a business owner??

My point was it allows you to make a new start and gives you lots of free time start up a new business (waiting for your next job).

So in terms of what I needed it for it was perfect, my online earnings are now in excess of £2000 per week and growing thanks to the start taxiing gave me.

I think the main problem is people see the job they do as the be all and end all, when there lots of other opportunities out there.

... I wouldn't have done taxiing in a small town. I see a city or large town as the only real options.

MY other half has been a taxi driver for a few years now.
he has been self employed most of his working life.

we are both S/Employed so no holiday or sick pay.

While I admire your optimism I'm not convinced I'm afraid. This coming from an ex-taxi driver of 20 years.

Too many people come into the business expecting to make a fast buck and then end up disappointed when they do not end up earning even the minimum wage.
The trouble is they see what a car can earn on a Friday and Saturday night and they become hoodwinked into the idea that they can make this sort of money all the time.
Time and time again I've seen new drivers go out and spend thousands on a car and within 6 months they have either moved areas or packed it in due to lack of work.

I was talking to a taxi mate only yesterday and he tells me that even the Friday and Saturday night trade has gone down now too. This is due to pubs and clubs closing, lack of money and the smoking ban to name a few.

I'd sooner go and wash pots or stack shelves than go and be a taxi driver again! ;)

Thats not what its like in my area. The taxi Drivers here seem to be doing more than alright. It depends what company you drive for though. Two of my uncles are taxi drivers and both are doing great. I also worked in a petrol station and made many friends who are taxi drivers. They also said it was an okay job. A couple of time though ive got into a taxi and asked how things are going i seem to get the opposite side of the arguement though, nbut i'm positive thats a tactic to get a wee bit extra for a tip.
