Rough price per m2 for standard decking to be installed?

Does anyone know what is an acceptable range of price per m2 for someone to lay decking on earth, a fairly level site.

Just standard decking, excluding steps, balustrades etc.

How much?????? Did your quote include materials? I wouldn't pay more than £200 a day for a chippie and his labourer.

Regarding materials, to get an idea I've found this for decking http://www.screwfix.com/prods/31245/Outdoor-Buildings/Metal-Sheds-Garden-Stores/Finnforest-Decking-2-4m-x-3-6m-Pack-of-24

A good chippie would easily fix this in a day if all the prep work is done, including copious amounts of tea!

Well our 1st of 3 quotes came today, this for a 4.2 x 3.3m deck slightly raised with one step and ballustrading to one of the long and short sides.

This is with standard softwood boards and 50x150mm joists.

    A cool £2400! Which for the 14 m2 works out at £160 a m2!

This is a specialist decking fitter who takes on complex jobs, but even so with that price I know it won't be him!

If the other 2 quotes are similar then it looks like muggins will be building it after all!

Obviously. The other quote I got was double that.

WOW!!! Does this include VAT as well?

What's a 'specialist decking fitter'? I assume you mean a carpenter or joiner? I would suggest that fitting some joists and decking boards is not at the upper end of complexity when it comes to caprentry skills! Obviously, you haven't given a detailed breakdown of works required but materials shouldn't cost any more than £700 (for joists, boards, balustrade and posts) based on screwfix pricing. If he is a 'specialist' then he will get much better prices from his timber merchant! It doesn't sound like a big job but even allowing for 3 days for 2 men @ £300 (which is high day rates) then the price would come in at around £1600. In my opinion, £2k would be the absolute tops and still gives a nice hefty margin.

    Yes that does include vat,

When I said specialist decking fitter, that was my own terminology as he only does decking, not general joiner or fencing.

I know the price is excessive, I will wait for the other 2 quotes but I think I will be doing it myself over a number of weekends :-(

I would expect to get 2 monkey's if I paid £200 per day down south. Just because someone is a good carpenter (a joiner wouldn't touch a decking job and prob doesn't have the skills) doesn't mean they will be able to do a good job with a deck. Ask to see examples/photos of work.

I would expect to pay between £65 & 100 per M2. Good timber is expensive so you get what you pay for. The stuff fromm Screwfix is likely to be at the lower quality end.

BTW, Decking should never be laid directly onto dirt. It will rot in a couple of years and won't stay level.

I've just laid my own deck - 20m2, cost was £1200 inc foundations, ballustrades etc - £2000-£3500 was quoted from local companies!
