Growing an Avocado Plant

Hello everyone,
Two years ago my mother-in-law gave us an avocado plant she had been growing, and as a guacamole fan I was thrilled! It was a small-ish plant (1 foot tall) when we had it, and have kept it indoors in a big pot ever since. It has grown outwards a quite a lot, but shows no signs of moving on to flowering or fruiting. I was just wondering whether we're doing something wrong, my DH who is a landscape gardener has no idea!
Has anyone had success in growing avocados? If you would share your experiences I'd be very grateful. Thank you so much!

As far as I know avocadoes grow on trees so while you have the start of one it will need lots more space before you will be making quacamole! Know nothing about pollination etc, have grown them a few times from stones but always seem to leave them out in winter or give them away.
I am sure that you will find something useful if you Google 'avocado'.

Ah well, I Googled, and it's bad news.
Avocados kept indoors will apparently never fruit, and even those which are planted outside will take a decade or more to do so (you're right meanmarie, they do have to become trees first). So no guacamole for me any time soon, I'd better pop down the shops! :rotfl:
I'll probably offer it on my local Freecycle, apparently it needs a lot of space to grow, and space is one thing we do not have!
Thanks for the advice!
