Formatting SD Card in OS X

I'm trying to format an SD card in OS X so I can add MP3s to it to play in my car stereo. The card has to be formatted using FAT32 so I have selected the relevant options in Disk Utility so do this.
The problem is that despite Disk Utility reporting the SD card is formatted to FAT32 it will not play in the car nor can it be read by a windows computer. What is going wrong here? Any ideas?
