New furniture bought off internet has woodworm

Can anyonehelp?
Bought a brand new piece of oak furniture off the internet a year and a half ago and it's got woodworm. A few holes were present when delivered but sometimes the manufacturer makes holes so that the furniture has that rustic look. The holes are now getting worse and I cant get in touch with the company who i bought it from? I paid by visa card so would they cover me.

Are the company actually still in business?

You should have made sure at the time. Clear evidence of the fault was present and you accepted it, I can't see you getting any remedy.

    Does woodworm attack Oak?

I thought it only went for soft woods.

Are you sure it is woodworm? Are there piles of dust accumulating where the new holes appear? Quite a few people I know have thought they had woodworm and it just turns out to be filler coming away from nail heads.

The Death Watch Beetle (not sure why they give it a scary name) LOVES oak, it will only attack softwoods once it's finished with the hardwoods. The other two types of woodworm (Common Furniture Beetle and House Longhorn Beetle) will only attack softwoods...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Yeah, it comes armed with AK47's, nunchucks and ability to disappear without trace (although a hammer seems to bring them out, apparently) :p

Death watch beetle - loved the above description of it being the Ninja SAS Marine of the beetle world ! If I remember correctly it is supposed to have got its name from the tapping sound a live infestation makes in an effort to attract mates that they say can actually be heard at night and therefore associated with quiet sleepless nights such as those watching the dying may have.

Back to the matter in hand if you don't get anywhere with the folk who sold you the item then wood boring infestations within things such as furniture / picture frames etc are sometimes dealt with by placing in cold storage, which over a few days will kill anything living in the wood. You might want to check that the infestation is actually active by monitoring such as taping paper / card over the wood to trap any emergining insect over the summer months and if you are going to go down the cold storage route check that secondary things such as soft furnishings if present would not be damaged by such a procedure prior to going ahead with such. Hope this helps all the best David Aldred Independent damp and timber surveyor
