after car crushed, dvla wants £99
two months ago, when my road tax expired, i wanted to get rid of the car. i declared it sorn and i put an advert to sell it. because i don't have parking, it was parked in front of my house, in the street. the dvla found out and took it away. since i wasn't interested in the car, i phoned them and told them they could crush it. i asked if there would be any costs or fines, and they told me that if i didn't want the car i wouldn't have to pay anything.
today i received a letter from the dvla saying:
"we have received an offence report alleging that your vehicle was seen used/kept on a public road whilst on a statutory off road notification declaration was in force...if you were the keeper on the date of alleged offence an out of court settlement of £99 is required to avoid court action"
I thought, and I was told by an dvla agent, that I wouldn't have to pay anything if i didn't claim the car back.
what's your knoledge about this ? do i still have to pay a fine even if i don't want the car ??

You did the crime, you pay the fine.0

No, you don't have to pay anything. They can't fine you twice for the same offence, where crushing your car would be the only fine.
They problaby think you want to recover the car.0 -
Isnt the fine for the car being parked on the road without a vailid tax disc.
Maybe the man meant there would be no costs for crushing it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
As far as I'm aware you are still liable for a fine for keeping the vehicle on a road untaxed, the crushing bit is just an added bonus

I quite like comments like this, short & to the point + no help at all!Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

You still have to pay the fine - you were just excused the recovery and storage costs.0

If you don't have any means of keeping a car off road then it's easier to tax it.0
