What Linux tools and security??

Hi all,
I have just got my hands on an Asus Eee pc900. Not the best but it was cheap!
My questions are what recommendations do you have for security tools? Things like CC cleaner (all for Linux) also things like free fire wall, Anti virus.
Also where is a good site to get these things?
Finally how do I download them??
I have done a search but have found very little.

Thanks so much you guys have never failed with your advice!!:D

Treat me kindly I`m just Confused :D

  • Don't worry too much about installing the correct security as Linux has very few virus threats anyway. if you are using Eee pc then you will have to locate your repository and use this to download any free software. There are loads of great free anti virus and firewall apps available to download. I would advise that you join a linux Ubuntu forum to get advice on the best software available.

    Hi
Linux has a built-in firewall that just works.
For most users it's not necessary to adjust it.

Also, an antivirus program isn't needed.
AVG make a Linux version. Some people use it to scan files before they transfer them onto a Windows computer.

For Linux there is a program called BleachBit which is equivalent to Ccleaner.

The only bits of software you'd need is the firefox plugins: "AdblockPlus", "Noscript" and "Beef Taco" (Beef Taco is a firefox script to block and opt-out of those personalized adds Google, yahoo and virtually every websire fires at you!)

As already said, you don't need much extra in the way of security.

However, Linux is vulnerable to rootkits, and has been for a long time. Currently, very few exploits are aimed at Linux, but if you are paranoid about these things, you can install "chkrootkit", which will scan for signs of known exploits.

For most distributions that use apt you can install it at the terminal using:

    sudo apt-get install chkrootkit

    and run it with

    sudo chkrootkit

I tend to run this every few months on my Linux-based PCs - never found anything yet, but it's no big deal as it only takes a few seconds to do.

The following suspicious files and directories were found:
    /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/.autoreg /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/.path /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/PyQt4/uic/widget-plugins/.noinit /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.6/.autoreg

I just run the "chkrootkit" and found this, but as I'm only a Ubuntu newbie I'm completely out of my depth about what to do about it.Grateful for any advice

Seem to be a false positive. Look inside one of the files with less or cat and you'll see that they are empty. I think all hidden files and folders (.*) outside the home directories are suspicious for this program.

    " less or cat"

I'm lost as I don't know what this means. Thanks for your reply.

Open a terminal and type in
    cat /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/.autoreg

    or
    less /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/.autoreg

    and so on...

    /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/.autoreg (END)

I typed in your commands and "less /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.6/.autoreg" came up with the above, but still know wiser what to do though.

Cat shows you the content of a file. It copies it right into the shell window you're using.

If you've got a text file that just contains
    Hello!
    then
    # cat test.txt
    Hello!
    #

If the file is empty, just an 0 byte file, it'll show:
    # cat test.txt
    #

You can also use nano if it's installed, it's a nice easy to use command line text editor.
    # nano test.txt

will open the file in nano for you to view.

is the command to quit out of less, in case you're stuck. :)
