My laptop is crashing

My laptop is overheating a lot and switches itself off. Sometimes I put it on sleep for a couple of minutes and that works fine. Other times when I try to wake it up from sleep mode the screen goes blue with white text and I cant access my computer without doing System recovery and startup repair.

I cant check my computer for viruses and other things because it tends to overheat before the scan is finished. ( A quick scan sometimes works but it has never found anything so far)

Check to see if the airflows are obstructed get a can of compressed air and blow out all the airflows.

It's an Aspire 5315 and Windows xp (I know nothing expensive or fancy)

I keep it on top of a oven grill stand so it got 1 1/2" air space underneath.

I had a simillar problem with a Dell laptop. I agree that a good blow with compressed air is good start. (didn't fix it for me though) I stripped out all the services that were running in the background that I didn't need, made sure that the absolute minimum of things happened at startup (lots of stuff was trying to access the internet at the same time to find updates). Also I downloaded a speed fan controller. The link below was not the one I used but it does mention the program I did download for my Dell. Hope the information is of help.

you have the same laptop as me.i also had the problem of it overheating, used compressed air,but it was still happening.
i disconnected it,opened up the back and unscrewed the fan, only to discover loads of dust, cleaned it,put it back together, and hey presto no more overheating, working a treat now
i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p

They get to a point, usually about 18 months after buying it, where the dust just turns into one solid block of fluff. Compressed air will not shift it and at best, will break it up into lumps which then stop the fan from spinning.
